Ilona passed away on February 26, 2012 in home as she had wished. She was born December 31, 1941 in Rotterdam, Holland. She and her husband and son came to the United States in 1982, living in California. In 1988 the van der Wiel's moved to Texas, where she and the family became American citizens. Something that she was very proud of.
She is survived by her husband, Hans M. van der Wiel. Married for 46 years. Her son, Yuri van der Wiel and fiancé, Amy Wharton and son, John. Her sister, Cora and husband, Gys Beekhuizen.
Ilona loved life and lived it to the fullest. She was a worldly traveler and an admirer of all cultures and countries, yet she always said that there is no place better than the United States. Ilona was the embodiment of class. She always had an open heart and mind. She will be missed by family and friends.
Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 9, 2012 in the Chapel at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following the service.
