Margaret Dean Griffiths Yater, 88, a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, affectionately known to her siblings and grandchildren as Poggy, passed away on June 19, 2017. Margaret was born on April 3, 1929 in Charleston, WV. She was a 1948 graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School in Charleston. Margaret began her career at Bell Telephone Co. in WV, then Firestone in OH, on to the attendance office of Westbury High School in the mid-1970’s and then Bertha Alice Day School at the Jewish Community Center, both in Houston TX.
Margaret is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Patty and Tom Strawmyer, Elizabeth and Frank Dunbar; son, Chester “Hank” Yater; granddaughter and her husband, Ashley and Phillip Dailey; great-granddaughters, Emmalyn and Abigail Dailey; step-grandson, Aaron Dunbar; sisters Pat Haskins and Jane Cox; brother, John H Griffiths, and many other loving relatives. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Chester H. Yater, Jr.; her parents, Reba Dean Hollandsworth Griffiths and Carl L. Griffiths, Sr. and her brother, Carl L. Griffiths, Jr.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with family from four to eight o’clock in the evening on Monday, July 10 at Memorial Oaks, 13001 Katy Freeway in Houston. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11 at Memorial Oaks. The graveside service and interment will follow at the Memorial Oaks Cemetery. A reception will be held immediately after the graveside service at Memorial Oaks.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association, the Arthritis Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
