Mac McCarthy was a beloved spouse, loving father, and kindhearted man who was loved by many. He passed away on August 11, 2015, after succumbing to a lengthy illness on August, 11, 2015 at a long-term acute care facility in Houston, Texas.
Mac was the son of General John McCarthy and Famata Burphy (both are now deceased). Mac was born on June 11, 1949, in Liberia.
Mac loved sports while growing up in Liberia. He played soccer while attending the Booker T. Washington Institute in Katata, Liberia, where he went to high school. After graduating from there, Mac joined the Liberian Soccer National team, where he excelled.
In 1971 Mac relocated to the United States and resided in the state of New York. He worked there until 1981 when he and his friend Henry Ponnie relocated to Houston to work for a company.
Mac met his wife Alice in New York City and they later got married.
Mac’s kindheartedness enabled him to make several friends, some of whom are now living in the United States.
As aforementioned, Mac was a sports fanatic. He loved playing and watching sports. His favorite team was the Houston Rockets. He also enjoyed football (Houston Oilers and later Houston Texans) and baseball (Houston Astros).
Before the onset of his illness, Mac enjoyed the company of his family, friends, and colleagues.
Mac had friends from many cultures. He was fondly known as ‘Baby Mac,’ ‘Mikee,’ ‘My Man,’ ‘Brother Mac,’ and ‘Mr. Mac.’ Many people who knew him before he became ill remember him as a kind and non-judgmental man. He was always willing to share whatever he had with others. Also, he was a selfless individual who was eager and willing to help anyone in their time of need.
Mac attended Bethel World Outreach Church in Houston with his family.
He will certainly be missed.
Mac is survived by his wife Alice, his children Tonieh, Michael, and Alice, three grandchildren, many siblings including John McCarthy and Winston Taylor and nephews, nieces, and other relatives and friends.
May he continue to rest in the arms of the Lord Jesus Christ, where there is no more pain, no more sorrow, no more sickness until we meet again.
