Melvin Lynn Roloff went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 26, 2011 following a lengthy and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born on March 8, 1937 in San Antonio, Texas and moved with his family to Victoria, Texas when he was 6 years old.
As a young man Lynn lettered in tennis and received his life-saving badge in Boy Scouts. He was also an Eagle Scout.
Following advanced standing at the end of his junior year of high school, Lynn entered the University of Texas in Austin where he received his B.B.A. in Accounting. He was a member of the ROTC and served in the Navy as a Supply Corps Officer on the U.S.S. Rochester. Lynn returned to Austin, passed the CPA exam, attended the UT Law School with a specialty in tax law, and graduated in the top 10% of his class. As he entered Law School he met and married Martha Mittel, with whom he was wed for 50 years. Following Law School Lynn and Martha moved to Victoria, where he was a junior partner in his dad’s CPA firm. While living in Victoria Lynn served as President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and was named Outstanding Young Man of the Year by the Victoria Chamber of Commerce. Following several years of practice in the CPA firm, Lynn’s zeal for computers led him to complete an IBM training course in Houston and then to accept a position in London as comptroller in charge of installing data processing in the eastern hemisphere for a Houston-based diving company. He and his family then returned to the states to make their home in Houston, where they resided for 34 years prior to moving to Sugar Land, Texas.
He was a true entrepreneur and was founder and president of Oil Data Processing, Inc. and Southwest Data, serving as a national distributer for AT&T computers. He was recently recognized as being a member of the Texas Society of CPAs for 50 years.
In spite of his many accomplishments in the business world, Lynn would say without hesitation that his greatest achievement was having taught adult Sunday School for 43 years. He was a true student of the Bible, and when asked where to find a verse of scripture, he would quote the source immediately. Lynn was also an avid student of Bible prophecy. He was a member of Houston’s First Baptist Church for 33 years, serving as a Deacon and usher, and a member of Tallowood Baptist Church for the past year.
All who have known Lynn will attest to the fact that he loved to tell jokes. He had a great sense of humor and took great joy in sharing his humor with everyone he met.
Lynn is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Lois Roloff of Victoria. He is survived by his wife, Martha, daughters Ellen Roloff-Norris and Susan Mack, sons-in-law Jim Norris and Sean Mack, grandson Tyler Mack, sister and brother-in-law Barbra and Philip Mann, brother-in-law John Mittel and his wife Toni, niece Lisa Easterwood, and nephew Michael Mann.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 29, 6-8 pm at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway. A celebration of Lynn’s life will take place on Friday, September 30, 11:30 am, at Houston’s First Baptist Church, 7401 Katy Freeway.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Houston Area Parkinson Society (www.hapsonline.org) or Star of Hope Mission.
The family wishes to express a deep appreciation to the caregivers of Evergreen Private Care and Reliable Oaks Personal Care Home for their exceptional service to Lynn during the last year of his life.
