Luis V. Garcia, a charismatic and beloved soul to many, departed our world on April 16th, 2024, in Richardson, Texas. Born on February 2, 1955, in Corpus Christi, Texas, Luis was the 6th child of his loving parents Carlos M. Garcia and Sofia (Villarreal) Garcia, who both proceed Luis in death. Luis’ greatest love was that of family, as one of nine children, he was always the life of the party. Luis loved and adored his brothers and sisters; Carlos, Fernando, Janie, Jesse, Yolanda, Daniel, Norma, and Ruben, making time to form close knit incredible relationships with each of them.
Luis graduated from Foy H. Moody High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1974. He would go on to work in many walks of life, but one of his fondest jobs was working alongside our father at Brown Express Trucking Company driving 18 Wheelers. In the process he discovered our father did in fact laugh, have a humorous side and was a very funny guy. Luis became a co-worker of our father and quickly became the family favorite at home and work. Luis single handily turned our father from a disciplinarian into a jokester in his own home, laughing and joking with each one of his children. Of course this made Luis my mom’s favorite too. Mom and Luis loved each other very much, always teaming up to attend garage sales in Corpus Christi, constantly laughing and bargain hunting for hours. Luis always made time to come home to Corpus Christi from Houston to visit Mom & Dad and hang out with his brothers and sisters.
Luis loved to laugh and re-tell stories of our family experiences growing up or of things that had happened to him recently at work. He enjoyed being surrounded by the people he loved and cared for, be they family or friends. He had this way of listening to stories being told, his facial expressions always told you he was all in, taking in every word, looking at you with heightened anticipation of a smile, laughter, amazement, or a compassionate comment. Luis had many friends growing up and in his professional life, all of which shared one common theme, they all describe Luis exactly the same; “Luis was like a brother to me.”
Luis was a free spirit, always taking life in stride and conquering the next challenge of life as it came. Luis always chose the simple life; love your family and friends and everything else will work itself out, by simply showing up or working harder. His compassion and caring demeanor were genuine and real, if you knew Luis, you had a true friend, who lived in your heart, a brother who cared about you.
In 1982, Luis married Gloria Leal of Corpus Christi, Texas and they moved to Houston, Texas. In July of 1985 they were blessed with the birth of a beautiful baby girl, Danielle Nicole Garcia. While the marriage ended, the love and commitment to Danielle would be paramount to each of them. Luis’ life was one of love, devotion, and support to Danielle, she was his world. Luis made Danielle a movie buff as they both enjoyed watching many favorite movies together, which also contributed to a game of famous movie line quotes, a favorite Garcia family pastime. From practicing catch for softball tryouts, swim team meet-ups around the Sugarland area, and exciting father- daughter vacations to Jamaica and Cozumel it was all about spending quality time with his daughter. Through Luis, Danielle was able to build lifelong memories and cherish loving moments together. Luis has and always will be Daddy to Danielle.
On January 28,1980, Luis found his professional passion, that of Police Officer in the Houston Police Department following in the footsteps of his brothers, Jesse and Daniel and ultimately inspiring Ruben the youngest to follow Luis footsteps in policing as well. In the Houston Police Department, Luis assignments included the North and Northeast Patrol Stations, Robbery, Narcotics, and the Auto Theft Division. Senior Police Officer Luis V. Garcia was to receive many awards of recognition from the Chief of Police, Command Staff, the Mayor of Houston, and the citizens he served. In short, Luis was a great cop. Luis loved policing and served 33 years in the Houston Police Department, retiring on February 1, 2014.
In April of 2015, Luis was diagnosed with dementia, an illness that would ultimately take Luis speech before it took his life, but it never took his love of Danielle or his family. To the final days of his life, Luis would still recognize each family member, smile, and acknowledge us with those beautiful green eyes.
Luis is survived by his daughter Danielle Harrison Garcia, and his son-in-law Bradford Harrison of Dallas, Texas, along with the following siblings and spouses; brother Carlos Garcia and his wife Mary of Corpus Christi, Texas, brother Fernando V.
