Louise Carr Smith

Louise Carr Smith passed away Thursday, October 19, 2023, at The Buckingham Senior Living Community, Skilled Nursing Unit in Houston, Texas. Louise was 91 years old, born October 22, 1931, in Berkeley, California, to Jeremiah Joseph Carr and Gladys May Stobie Carr. She graduated from The University of Missouri, Columbia, with a BS in Business Administration - Accounting with a minor in Political Science in 1953. While at the University of Missouri, Louise was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority. Louise was a lifelong learner and continued her studies throughout her life. Louise graduated from the University of Washington with a Master of Librarianship in 1965 and received a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Houston in 1982.

Louise married Robert Ryland Smith on June 6, 1953, in Columbia, Missouri, and had one daughter, Katherine Louise Dawson. As a college student, Louise spent her summers working as a post office clerk in one of her favorite places, Yosemite National Park. After college, Louise worked as an accountant and librarian and taught piano to individuals in her community for over twelve years. As a young married woman, she was politically active and served as a district vice-chairman and precinct committeeman. Louise and her husband enjoyed sailing and racing their Lightning Sailboat. She was a fantastic skier and enjoyed playing tennis and golf. Louise earned her pilot license and enjoyed flying small airplanes with her husband. She loved traveling and toured extensively throughout Europe to explore her passion for classical music. Louise was involved in Toastmasters, the Houston Music Teacher Association, and the American Association of University Women. She was a proud member of the Aggie Moms Club and Chi Omega Moms Club. Louise was an avid reader and pursued her passion for the arts through painting, playing piano, and attending concerts. She enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with her family and many pets, including cats and West Highland White Terriers. Louise was a resident at The Buckingham Senior Living Community in Houston, Texas.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Lane Dawson; grandchildren, Andrew Dawson, Madeleine Dawson, and Rebecca Dawson; her brother, Thomas Woesten Carr; and her nephews, Thomas Anthony Carr, married to Betty Carr and Michael James Carr. She is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Robert Ryland Smith; her parents, Jeremiah Joseph Carr and Gladys May Stobie Carr; and her brother, Jerry James Carr.

Graveside Service will be held on October 27, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas. Arrangements are under the care of Earthman Funeral Directors at 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77024.
