He was born on the 27th of August 1935, at Hermann Hospital in Houston, to immigrant parents from Lebanon. He attended Lamar Elementary, Pershing Jr. High and San Jacinto High School where he played football and was All City Center in 1953. The football team called themselves the “Band of Brothers” and their strong bond and friendships were lifelong. After graduating in 1959 from Rice University where he played football, he entered the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. Louis then returned to Houston as a Captain in The U.S. Army Reserve and began his life-long self-employed career in real estate.
Louis was an involved member of The Young Republican Club of Houston where he met his wife, Mary Ann, and began his political career. As a proud Houstonian, he served for 2 terms as a Houston City Councilman (1976-1980) and then ran twice as a mayoral candidate. His passion for Houston and politics never wavered as he was outspoken in his beliefs. He was a visionary and a leader throughout his life. Louis served as Chairman of the then newly formed Harris County Appraisal District’s Review Board, Board Member of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (METRO) for 7 ½ years and a member of the Houston Planning Commission. He was a long-time member and Past President of the “C” Club of Houston and a former Trustee of the Houston Realty Business Coalition, a member of The Houstonian Club, Hey Lollies Square Dance Club, The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and an active member of St. Michael Archangel Catholic Church where he was a founding member of The Knights of Columbus Council 14700.
Always proud of his Lebanese heritage, he actively participated in The Fellowship Club and L’Entasar Club. Louis enjoyed watching Houston sports with family and friends and thrived when working on real estate deals. He loved food and often could be seen hosting a business lunch at China Gardens or the Fountain View Fish Market. For years, Louis frequented the Houstonian Club first thing in the morning to “work out”. To his kids’ amusement, they later learned that he was working the room by socializing and talking about real estate instead of working out. He adored his family and many summer vacations were spent at South Padre Island.
When grandchildren arrived, he loved holding the babies as they slept on his chest. As they grew, rarely was a sporting event missed or an opportunity to fish with them at the lake. Time with Papa often included a trip to Whataburger, ice cream or a game of Chicken Foot dominoes. He will always be remembered for his love of God, family, country and city.
He is predeceased by his parents, Abraham and Nozera Hage Macey; sisters, Beatrice Craig, Mary Ann Osborn; brothers, Sam Joseph, Edmond Joseph, Abraham Abdalla and George Macey.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Ann Hansen Macey; children, Cynthia Fitzmartin and husband Glen, Stephanie Holt and husband Kevin and Louis Abraham Macey and wife Emily and his grandchildren, Jack, Macey, Molly and Will Fitzmartin, Annie, Louis, Ellie, Maris and Margo Macey, Evie Holt and numerous nieces and nephews.
We extend unending gratitude to Dr. George Nassar for his kindness, friendship and dedication to Louis’ wellbeing.
