Lorene "Sissy" Birdwell

Lorene “Sissy” Birdwell, born in Guntersville, Alabama, on the 9th of August 1932, passed away on Thursday, the 10th of May 2012, at 79 years old. She worked in Huntsville, Alabama, and was an Administrator for the NASA Apollo Program. In 1999, she moved to Houston.

Sissy was very benevolent and volunteered her time through the Woman’s League of Houston where she served as President for two terms, among other board positions. Most importantly to her, she was a strong Christian and regularly attended Tallowood Baptist Church. She loved her family and was a very honest spoken sister, aunt, and great aunt.

Sissy is preceded in death by her parents, the late Boyce Reginald and Lena Mae Birdwell and her brothers, Boyce Reginald Birdwell, Jr. and Roy Dean Birdwell. Sissy filled the role of mother to niece, Mitzi B. Cash and husband William, and grandmother to great nieces and nephews, Lauren G. Lionberger and husband Rand of Houston, and Ryan M. Gaubert of New Orleans, and Elizabeth Carvall of Eastbourne, England, and Jonathan Cash and Mandy Page of Surrey, England, all of whom survive her. She is also survived by her brother, Donald Birdwell and wife Frances of Birmingham, Alabama; her nieces and nephews, Paige Keracik and husband Erik of Houston, Texas, Bryan Birdwell and wife Kelly of Atlanta, Georgia, Angela McDearis and husband Brian of Birmingham, Alabama, Brad Curfman and wife Aimee of Atlanta, Georgia, Britt Birdwell and wife Dawn of Huntsville, Alabama, Andrew Birdwell of Birmingham, Alabama, Paul Birdwell and wife Liz of Bozeman, Montana; and seventeen great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is to be conducted at half-past two o’clock in the afternoon on Sunday, the 13th of May, in the Fireside Room of Tallowood Baptist Church, 555 Tallowood Road in Houston, where Associate Pastor Larry Bertrand is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception at the church.
