Lloyd Cox of Houston, Texas, passed away on April 6, 2025, at the age of 97. He was born on March 25, 1928, in Groveton, Texas, to James and Mary Cox. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Madelyn Cox, his father, James Henry Cox, and his mother, Mary Ellen Cox.
Lloyd is survived by his son, Randy Cox and his wife, Donna; his daughter, Judy Jackson and her husband, Greg; his son, Virgil Cox and his wife, Sandie. His six grandchildren: Taylor Cox and his wife, Chay; Amberly Lake and her husband, Jordan; Grace Genda and her husband, Trey; Grant Hill and his wife, Jasmine; Kristin Hamon and her husband, James; and Austin Cox and his wife, Katie as well as his fifteen great grandchildren: Weston Cox, Daren Cox, Reagan Cox, Walker Lake, Baker Lake, Rachel Genda, Paige Genda, Rylee Genda, Will Genda, Cora Hill, Sadie Hamon, Hollyn Hamon, Isla Cox, Levi Cox, Ruby Cox, and many nieces and nephews as well as a host of friends.
Lloyd H. Cox, a World War II veteran, respected businessman, previous owner of Cox Hardware, and beloved family man, lived a life defined by strength, service, and perseverance.
Raised during the hardships of the Great Depression, Lloyd faced challenges early but never let them slow him down. At just 15 years old, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, served as a tail gunner aboard a PBM Mariner seaplane, and logged 841 combat hours. His vivid wartime experiences and stories remain as an unforgettable part of his legacy.
After returning home from the war, Lloyd and his family opened Cox Hardware in Houston. However, he later pursued a successful career in sales, most notably at Peden Iron and Steel and Cruise Aviation. He eventually returned to run Cox Hardware. He served as the President of the Southwest Hardware and Implement Association as well as the President of the Harrisburg Rotary Club. He was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow for his dedication to service. Lloyd was indeed a significant leader in the East End Houston business community.
Lloyd and Madelyn raised three children and remained faithful members of Woodridge Baptist Church. He was known for his unwavering work ethic, honest business practices, and generosity toward others.
He will be remembered for his love of flying and sailing, his fondness for sharing stories of his World War II experiences, his passionate support of the Houston Cougars, and his commitment to living a life of integrity. Lloyd’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the values he passed down, and the stories we will tell for generations.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 11, 2025, at 11:00 am at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Harrisburg Rotary Club, reflecting Lloyd’s lifelong dedication to helping others.
