Lillian Clay Melancon, 81, passed away December 26, 2023 after spending Christmas surrounded by her entire family. Born in Church Point, Louisiana, she grew up in the nearby small town of Sunset and became a band director after graduating from USL (now ULL) in Lafayette. After teaching music and English for many years, she went back to school and became a court reporter for the last few decades of her life.
Lillian is survived by daughter Jenny and husband Kevin Landry, and daughter Christie and husband Scotty Johnson. She had five grandchildren - Lucas, Charlotte, Brooke, Caroline and Audrey - and three step grandchildren - Morgan, Jonah and Nicolas. She is also survived by her sister Emily Terracina. She was preceded in death by her husband James Elvoy Melancon, and her parents, Preston and Thelma (Arnold) Clay.
Lillian was a voracious reader and always had a stack of library books sitting by her chair. Whenever she learned of a particular book being banned, she would immediately purchase it for her grandchildren to read. She also loved cooking and trying new recipes, to the delight of her family. She passed her love of musicals on to her kids and grandkids. Lillian adored spending time in New York and made countless trips there. And she is a cancer survivor.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2023 in the Memorial Oaks Funeral Home Chapel located at 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079.
If you desire, the family suggests donations in Lillian’s memory be made to the Harris County Public Library or the charity of your choice in lieu of the usual remembrances
