

Leslie ‘Gene’ Brokmeyer, age 80, of Houston, Texas went to be with the Lord on March 17, 2023. He was born on March 25, 1942 in New Ulm, Texas to Clemens and Elenora (Buxkemper) Brokmeyer. He was the third of six children.
Gene was educated at Sts. Peter and Paul Elementary School in Frelsburg, Texas and St. John’s Catholic High School in Fayetteville, Texas. After moving to Houston, on September 23, 1962, Gene married the love of his life, and high school sweetheart, Johnnie Mae Svrcek of Fayetteville, Texas and they began their 60 years of marriage. They built a marriage that was a beautiful example of love and loyalty for family and friends. Gene and Johnnie Mae were blessed with three wonderful children Gregory, Kellye and Stephen.
Gene’s life was anchored by his Catholic faith and his love for Jesus Christ was exemplified in so many ways. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an active member of St. Jerome’s Catholic Church since 1963. Gene joined the Knights of Columbus in 1967, was active on both the school board and parish councils, and was an usher for many years. Gene loved his community deeply and adored all the special friends he made. He loved playing dominoes, fishing and hunting as hobbies and for employment he owned his own barbershop until he started working for Grainger, where he retired after 32 years. Gene was patient, kind, fun-loving, generous and such a joy to be around.
Gene is survived by his wife, Johnnie Mae, son Greg (Sherri) Brokmeyer of Cypress, Texas, daughter Kellye (Kevin) Mathis of Cypress, Texas, and son Stephen Brokmeyer of Pflugerville, Texas; five grandchildren, Alyssa (Forrest) Short, Alexandra Brokmeyer, Julia Wilson, Dylan (Samantha) Brokmeyer, and Andrew Wilson; two step-grandchildren Jeffrey Mathis and Phillip Mathis; great-grandchild Harper Mae Short; four sisters Florian Skubal of Rockdale, Texas, Madeline (J.D.) Kovar of Fayetteville, Texas, Margaret (Jerry) Kubala of Fayetteville, Texas and Jennifer (Raymond) Broz of Bleiblerville, Texas; and sister-in-law Jeanette Brokmeyer of Buchanan Dam. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Darwin Brokmeyer of Buchanan Dam.
Visitation with the family was held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road Houston, Texas 77055. The Rosary was recited at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Jerome Catholic Church, and the Funeral Mass followed at 11:00 a.m. The Rite of Committal began at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Fayetteville, Texas.
