Lawrence Gillingham, born November 11, 1920 in New Jersey passed away on December 4, 2010 in Houston. He moved to Houston in 1921 and graduated from Lamar High School in 1938. He served a 4 year hitch in the Navy in World War II. Lawrence received three college degrees after attending five universities: Rice University, University of California, University of Houston, Columbia University, and the University of Chicago. Lawrence was in public education for 37 years, mostly with Houston I.S.D. He was director of the media center where he was known as “Dr. G” and retired in 1986. He was an Eagle Scout and was active in the Boy Scouts for 25 years. He was a founding member and served in many capacities at St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church. He enjoyed international travel, having visited many countries as well as travel in the family Airstream to many states. Other hobbies included round dancing, square dancing, and tinkering with computers. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Juanita; son, Larry; daughters, Cassy and husband Steve, and Penny; 4 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, December 9, 2010 at St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church, 2003 W. 43rd St., Houston, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund at St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church.
