He was born on December 9, 1940, in Montgomery, Louisiana, to Edwin and Edna Johnson Stroud. His early formative years were spent in Louisiana until the family moved to Houston. During those first years in Houston he fondly remembers being a part of the Knot Hole Gang for the Houston Buffs. He was a graduate of Stephen F. Austin High School and the University of Houston.
Larry began his career in the banking industry in the mailroom of the Texas National Bank the predecessor to Texas Commerce Bank rising to the rank of Executive Vice President responsible for all mortgage banking relationships. Subsequent to Texas Commerce Bank he completed his lifelong career in mortgage lending and banking relationships with various lending institutions and retired in 2006 from Comerica Bank. Throughout his career he was known for the business and personal relationships he garnered and maintained with the leading mortgage banking companies throughout Houston and Southeast Texas during the tremendous Houston growth years.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Susan Harris, and his daughters Kimberly Watson and husband, Joey, Pamela Beavers and husband, Ryan, grandchildren Ronnie Watson and wife Rachael and daughter Hayden Armstrong, Reese Watson and girlfriend Bianca, Brandon Beavers and Blakely Beavers. He is also survived by Lillie Stroud, his former wife and mother of Kim and Pam, nephews David Stroud, Ted Stroud, Jr., Gary Stroud, Stuart Stroud, Jack Berry, and Todd Berry, and nieces Maggie Lastovica, Liz Spradling and Cindy Berry. He was predeceased by his son, Allen, sisters Billie Stroud, Gloria Berry and Elizabeth Stroud, brothers Howard Stroud and Ted Stroud and nephews Kenneth Stroud and Gary Lastovica.
Larry was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing and being in nature and enjoyed being outside with family and friends. He was an amazing cook known by many as “Chef Larree.” He was a long time member of BraeBurn Country Club where he was known as “Panama” and enjoyed his time on the golf course but particularly his time in the card room with his golfing and card buddies.
A celebration of Larry’s life will be held on Friday, January 10, at 2 p.m. at Earthman Funeral Home Hunters Creek, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77024. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Heart Association, Star of Hope Mission or the charity of your choice.
