Sometimes, unless you work with someone, it is hard to get a sense of someone in their work life, as opposed to their non-work life. Therefore, I wanted to write a few things about how Kuo was at work.

As described by several co-workers in yesterday's memorial service, Kuo was really smart. These were not just kind words. Kuo was highly respected by clients and co-workers. Our company got repeat client work because of Kuo. I have heard various engineers say things like "I wish I knew a fraction of what Kuo knows" or "even if I work hard my whole career, I would never reach Kuo's level". Engineering doesn't come easy for most, but, for Kuo, it was as easy as breathing.

Despite being genius-level smart, Kuo was approachable, humble, and never condescending. He was always willing to help whenever a co-worker had a question, providing advice, reference materials, and explanations. He was a good mentor.

Unlike some people to whom work is equal to life, it was obvious that work wasn't the most important thing in Kuo's life. He had various interests that he spoke of (wine, stock market, etc.). He clearly loved his family and had various family photos on display at his office on his back desk and white board.

In one's career, one encounters different types of people: some good, some bad. Kuo was a good one. Many of us are definitely better engineers just for having worked with him. Kuo was a respected colleague, skilled engineer, mentor, and friend who will be missed dearly.

Kou Liang and I were school mates when we were in primary school. After the junior high school entrance exam, we became classmates. During the 3 years stay in Hualien, I had my best time in my life. Although all the memories were vague now but I do remember the happy moments in that period. We were together cycling, go picnic and catching cicadas in late summer. Later on I followed my parents moved to a northern city in Taiwan. That was at my 8th grade. So we separated since then. Then I heard that he and my cousin Anita became a couple. I deeply blessed them with good future. The result proves they were right and they loved each other so much till now.
During recent couple years, we were getting more close. We were talking about our childhood and possible mutual friends. Each time we get together I can feel his love to his family. And in this year he took his whole family traveling back to Taiwan. This is my first time to meet  his son Andrew (his wife Janice), his daughter Angela (her husband Ben) as well as his grandchildren Aron, Zoe, Alexa, Ethan, Austin. During this trip I am glad that I did spend quite a lots of time to accompany the family. If not I would be so regret that that I missed our last gathering. Who knows only after 3 months we received this tragedy news. It really shows that an Chinese old saying: Nobody knows tomorrow and accident which will come first. We should treasure all the moments that we can hold in reality. Anita, you have to be strong and take care of yourself. Farewell my dear friend, rest in peace. May God be with you.

民国55年8月12日，台湾大专院校联合招生委员会放榜，公布了当年各大专院校錄取的新生名单。我很高兴在台大土木系找到了自己的名字。除了庆幸自己金榜题名外，最想知道的就是，到了台大後，会有哪些新同学、新朋友？在放榜名单上，就在我的名字旁边，是一位我不认识的人，他的名字叫 “余国良“。
 
九月学校開学了，终於遇到，也认识了国良兄。我们都住在六张犁山脚下的台大男生第八宿舍，也從此開始了每天清晨一起骑脚踏车，從男八匆忙趕到新生大楼上课的生活。不在话下的是，也一起 “偶尔“ 偷闲，翘些排的太早或是不喜欢上的课。
 
大二，我们不约而同地转系，成了55化工的一员。也许是 “英雄所见略同“ 吧！
 
大二暑假，國良兄、振攀兄和我，三人一起决定到花莲的台肥廠当暑期实习生。到了花莲，振攀兄和我就住在國良兄家，每天晚上我们三人挤在国良兄家二楼的楼阁裏，高谈阔论，说些自己过去的英雄史。
 
在台肥廠上下员工，众目睽睽，好奇的眼光下，我们三位 “来自台大的学生“，每天白天在濃濃的NH3熏陶中，乖乖地渡过了三个月。不过每天一下班，一到晚上，我们就開始 “生龙活虎“ 起来。我们骑着国良兄姐夫借给我们的100 CC Honda 摩托车，不是到花莲海边，就是到七星潭 “混“ 到半夜才回家。很多时候，如果国良兄的青梅竹马（日後的）曼青嫂不忙时，也会入加我们三位 “蓋仙“ 的行列。一个暑假下来，不知不觉间，我们建立了更深厚的友谊，和對花莲的感情。

My deepest condolences to the Yu Family. I met Kuo when I started my career as process engineer after graduation. I have known Kuo my entire career. We were coworkers both at Litwin and Mustang. Kuo was always well respected by his colleagues, and I sure was one of them.  Although it is very sad that he had left us, he will be dearly missed by all his friends and colleagues.

我们知道这封信是永远無法寄出去的。我们也知道国良兄是看不到这篇缅怀我们友谊的文字。可是，想起我们在台大建立的 “革命情感“，我禁不住地，提起了筆：

民国55年8月12日，台湾大专院校联合招生委员会放榜，公布了当年各大专院校錄取的新生名单。我很高兴在台大土木系找到了自己的名字。除了庆幸自己金榜题名外，最想知道的就是，到了台大後，会有哪些新同学、新朋友？在放榜名单上，就在我的名字旁边，是一位我不认识的人，他的名字叫 “余国良“。

九月学校開学了，终於遇到，也认识了国良兄。我们都住在六张犁山脚下的台大男生第八宿舍，也從此開始了每天清晨一起骑脚踏车，從男八匆忙趕到新生大楼上课的生活。不在话下的是，也一起 “偶尔“ 偷闲，翘些排的太早或是不喜欢上的课。

大二，我们不约而同地转系，成了55化工的一员。也许是 “英雄所见略同“ 吧！

大二暑假，國良兄、振攀兄和我，三人一起决定到花莲的台肥廠当暑期实习生。到了花莲，振攀兄和我就住在國良兄家，每天晚上我们三人挤在国良兄家二楼的楼阁裏，高谈阔论，说些自己过去的英雄史。

在台肥廠上下员工，众目睽睽，好奇的眼光下，我们三位 “来自台大的学生“，每天白天在濃濃的NH3熏陶中，乖乖地渡过了三个月。不过每天一下班，一到晚上，我们就開始 “生龙活虎“ 起来。我们骑着国良兄姐夫借给我们的100 CC Honda 摩托车，不是到花莲海边，就是到七星潭 “混“ 到半夜才回家。很多时候，如果国良兄的青梅竹马（日後的）曼青嫂不忙时，也会入加我们三位 “蓋仙“ 的行列。一个暑假下来，不知不觉间，我们建立了更深厚的友谊，和對花莲的感情。

台大畢業候，我们都来了美国。但紧接着的是，学位、工作、家庭、和小孩，一连串的忙碌，一直没机会和國良和曼青兄嫂联络叙舊。一晃，五十几年的光陰就悄悄地溜走了。近十几年回台，我们倒是特别去过花莲三次，去找寻那些年轻时留下的足迹和笑声。不过，随着花莲的繁荣与发展，除了熙熙攘攘的人潮外，再也找不到國良兄的故居，只有怅然而歸。

谁知，再次聴到國良兄的消息，竟是晴天霹雳的噩耗，已与國良兄已天人永别！

我们祈願國良兄一路好走，在天之靈，永得安息！

我和禮宜，除了表達我们由衷無限哀思之情外，也要請曼青大嫂和家人，節哀保重！逝者已矣，生者如斯，国良兄给大家的美好回憶，将永远留在你们全家人的心中，也将会永远留在我们的心中！

Kuo is a very closed 兄弟&同學of mine.
One of My 物化lab partners (余國良 洪振攀 葉雲利 和我），same graduate school  advisor @UH, lived in the same apartment, Cougar, when we first arrived Houston in the 70s.  He (& all my friends ) supported my husband’s practice…. by being his patients…

我的贵人 My Hero
Kuo 是一個非常和善的人，對待朋友更是義不容辭的幫忙。一直都是待人誠懇值得信賴的朋友。
He is the one helped me find my one lifetime job! Lasted 40 yrs, 1974 -2016.   1974 spring, he gave me a ride, took me to interview @ MW Kellogg in greenway plaza, he babysat my son Irwin in the car while I interviewed……

I’m So blessed to have the opportunities to travel the life journey knowing Kuo!

Pray that God bless Kuo in heaven and family on earth!

Kuo and I were college classmates in Taiwan and had known each other for over 57 years. In late 1978, we with our spouse met again in Houston. At that time, Anita was pregnant with Andrew and Tina was with Janice. Since Kuo and I were working in different industries and live pretty much across the town. We only met and saw each other occasionally. It was until 2007, when Andrew and Janice got married, the two families grew closer. We got together often for birthdays, holidays or just for fun and we even traveled together as a big family. As years went by, we felt their caring nature and generosity toward extended families like us.
 
Kuo was sweet, easygoing, and always wearing a big smile. Everybody felt comfortable to be friend with him and felt his genuine warmth. Kuo was a loving father as well as a wonderful grandfather, his five grandkids called him Yeye. Yeye in their life played very important roles: baby sitter, protector, teacher, dog sitter, gardener, and he helped out anyway he could tirelessly. Kuo was very considerate and always told us no worry he would take care of it because he lived closer. Since I am a vegetarian, when we dined out, he made sure there were vegetable dishes for me. In fact, Kuo was not only an outstanding professional at work but also a loving and caring family man.
 
Kuo’s sudden passing was a total shock to everyone who knew him. It was especially difficult for his family and in-laws like us. Some grandkids may be too young to comprehend but they surely notice Yeye’s absence. The two older ones burst into tears when they heard the news. The reality is “Yeye is not coming back anymore.” I am sure that they all felt Yeye’s unconditional love deep in their hearts.
 
Tina and I are so blessed to know Kuo and Anita and share three beautiful grandchildren with them. Kuo, we want to thank you for being a part in our life and you will certainly be missed. Most of all we will forever cherish the memorable time we spent together.

I am deeply saddened to learn that I lost a college classmate, Kuo Yu ; one of the few classmates (NTU Ch.E. 55) moved to Houston after graduation from thousands miles away. 

Time may pass and fade away but memories  of you will always stay.

I have known of Kuo since early 1980’s. But we really became acquainted and became good friends when I joined Litwin in 1989. He was my Process manager on many projects. He was my mentor and I benefited tremendously working under Kuo’s leadership. One of Kuo’s many talents that always amazed me was that Kuo seemed to have a photography memory. He remembered every numbers and other work details clearly. When we want to quote a number to him we better double check it.

Kuo, we will always remember you!

Kuo and I met just a few days prior to his trip to Greece. Kuo was smiling and excited, and we talked about him and Anita exploring the beauty of ancient Greece.  The news of Kuo’s passing struck me like a lightning bolt, leaving me utterly bewildered and unable to comprehend the sudden loss.

I have known Kuo and his family for more than forty-five years. We both went to the same college, graduate school, and workplaces until his retirement. Kuo was my mentor when I started my first job at Litwin.  I am forever indebted to him for his invaluable guidance in the early days of my career. He is the smartest process engineer I have known, and his brilliance is unmatched.   He commands the utmost respect from both his colleagues and customers as a true distinguished leader.

Throughout our many years of collaboration, Kuo and I not only share similar professional mindsets but also closely align in our work styles.  Kuo and I often discuss the intricacies of our respective projects.  People in the office playfully dubbed us "two PEs (process engineers) in a pod,".  I reminisce about the early days when we would tirelessly toil away into the late hours of the night in our empty office or spend entire weekends working without the comfort of air conditioning.  Kuo is my true “dear comrade 親密的戰友”!

Apart from being a dedicated worker, Kuo is a devoted family man. Kuo loves spending time with his lovely wife, Anita, 2 successful adult children, Andrew & Angela, and 5 adorable grandchildren. He values his family above everything else and has always been a loving, caring, strong pillar of the family.

True friends are hard to find. Kuo, I'm so grateful to have you as a dear friend of mine.  Saying goodbye was the hardest thing to do.  You will be deeply missed, but your legacy of kindness and passion will live on!

I enjoyed working with Kuo.  He collected a lot of valuable technical documents and organized them very well.  When we worked on the same project, he was willing to share the related documents with us.  It was very helpful.  When we go to client's office, we would like to drink beer and talk a lot at night in the restraint.  He is a very smart and friendly person.   We miss him very much.

On 9/22 Kuo unexpectedly passed away during his Greece tour. I was so shocked and couldn’t believed it was true as Kuo always looked so young and healthy even we just got together on 9/16 the day before him starting the dream tour.

Kuo is my close friend, my college classmate in National Taiwan University, my professional engineer colleague and supervisor while we both worked at Litwin engineers, Raytheon, and Mustang engineering. In 1991 Kuo suggested me to broaden my process engineer experience to include refineries and also referred me to work for Litwin engineering company. Since then we both worked for the same company for next 20 years. 

Kuo was a very smart and hardworking person. He always brought work from office to his house during the night and weekends. He was so smart and talented that he could memorize the design criteria and parameters for many refining process units. He had been a very detailed person and definitely looked for “above and beyond” on every project he performed. I was very lucky to work under his assistance and supervision. 

Except he wasn’t able to stay in this world longer, I can tell that Kuo had been a great family man and well loved person in his career and his family. I  knew he and his wife often took terns to baby sit grandchildren with their in-laws in Houston. He is a person with endless love and caring not only to his family but also to his colleagues and friends. With Kuo’s invitation and generosity my wife and I totally enjoyed the trip to Chicago and Savanna attending his son and daughter’s wedding.

Kuo, we love you . We cherished every moment when we were together. You will be forever remembered. 

To Kuo’s beloved wife, Anita, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

My name is Chris Pohlig.  I worked with Kuo in the 1980’s at Litwin Engineers.  I am very saddened to learn of Kuo’s passing.  I will alway remember Kuo as a kind person who was generous in sharing his knowledge and straight and fair in dealing with others.
