Our beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, Kevin Lee Cater, age 62, passed away on Thursday, March 3rd, 2022, at his Cypress, Texas, home. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, and high school sweetheart, Rachel Nadler Cater, and his children Kristin and Chase Norrell, Scott and Elizabeth Cater, and Ryan Cater. Kevin took great pride in his children and grandchildren and was lovingly called “G-Daddy” by Levin Tuma, Nash Stevens, Olivia Norrell, Heidi Cater, and Starla Cater. Kevin is preceded in death by his father, Ray Cater, and mother, Nelda Smith Cater, and survived by his brother Steven Cater and Kathryn, and his sister, Starla and Robert Ruello.
Kevin was born on the 12th of May 1959 in Magnolia, Arkansas. As a young man he began his career in the natural gas industry working as a laborer and then became a skilled welder. Kevin earned a Bachelor of Science in Construction from Louisiana State University, and went to work at Texas Eastern Transmission Company in Houston, Texas, as a Construction Superintendent where he advanced his industry knowledge and experience and progressed his career to become a Construction Manager and Project Manager while also earning a Master of Business Administration from Our Lady of the Lake University. Kevin left Duke Energy for an opportunity to work for Rogers & Phillips, initially as a Project Manager and later became Vice President and President of Rogers & Phillips – Willbros Construction USA. In this role, Kevin was instrumental in successfully completing multiple major pipeline construction projects and grew the firm to become the largest non-union contractor in the United States.
Kevin pursued his passion for innovation in the energy industry across his four-decade career. A natural leader, Kevin continued on in leadership roles to serve as President at Ledcor Pipeline, CEO for Sigma Energy Group, Sr. Vice President and COO for Energy Maintenance Services, LLC, Sr. Vice President for Construction Management for Universal Pegasus International, and finally, Vice President, EPC at Quanta Pipeline Services in Houston, Texas. Kevin loved the energy industry and had a special place in his heart for field work. He was happiest just “sitting on a job.” He loved the people and took every opportunity to nurture the talent of our future Industry leaders. He is well known and loved and respected within the energy community.
Kevin enjoyed golf, travel, and guitar, perhaps in that order. He was an avid golfer and founding member at Sterling Country Club, Houston. He was a talented bass player who joined the rock band Cobra in his teens and nurtured the musical talent of his sons, Scott and Ryan. His hobbies and interests took him on many worldwide travel adventures. He loved flying and was especially proud of his United 1K status. He especially loved traveling with his family.
A visitation service for our beloved Kevin will be held Saturday, March 12, 2022, at 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. at Brookside Funeral Home – Cypress Creek, 9149 Highway 6 North, Houston, TX 77095.
