Born on October 6, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, Kent was the beloved son of Karl and Kaye Bigelow. Though an only child, his desire for siblings was fulfilled through the bonds he formed with his in-laws after marrying his beloved Mary.
Kent's path intertwined with Mary's on December 14, 1974, at a Michigan State University hangout. The very next evening, he treated Mary and her daughter, Lisa, to dinner, where his affection for both blossomed. Two months later, on February 14, 1975, they exchanged vows in a courthouse ceremony, forever sealing their love. From that moment on, Lisa joyfully embraced him as her daddy.
While pursuing his studies in mechanical engineering at Michigan State University, Kent also worked at Oldsmobile. However, the allure of the booming oil and gas industry led him to Houston, Texas, shortly after the birth of his daughter, Carrie. The Bigelow family settled into a home where they crafted countless memories over 47 years. When they discovered they were expecting their third child, he called on friends for help forming "3 Drunks Construction" and embarked on the ambitious project of adding a second floor to their home, a testament to Kent's ingenuity and determination. He was quite the handyman, though sometimes Mary would find car parts in the dishwasher or oven—apparently, nowhere was off-limits for his mechanical endeavors!
Kent's passion for automobiles was evident throughout his life. From running a car repair business in Michigan to acquiring and restoring classic vehicles like the 1955 Chevy pickup and the 1962 Studebaker Avanti, his love for automotive craftsmanship knew no bounds. His CB handle, UFO, and his knack for finding car parts in unexpected places were just a few quirks that endeared him to those who knew him well.
In his professional life, Kent excelled as an engineer in the oil and gas industry. His work took him around the globe, from designing and building compressor stations to spending 18 months in Thailand. His sharp mind and exceptional memory were matched only by his generosity and larger-than-life personality. Kent was known for his straightforwardness and unwavering honesty, traits that endeared him to many. He had a unique ability to find humor in any situation and wasn't afraid to speak his mind—his son-in-law once joked that Kent had "no filters," but that's what made him so endearing.
Kent's passing leaves a void in the lives of his wife, Mary, his children Lisa, Carrie, and Kyle, his eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, extended family, and countless friends. Yet, his spirit will endure in the countless hearts he touched with his boundless love, laughter, and unique brand of humor.
Kent Edward Bigelow's life was a testament to the power of love, laughter, and unyielding determination. Though he may have left this world, his legacy will forever illuminate the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
A celebration of life for Kent will be held Saturday, May 11, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road, Houston, TX 77055.
