Kelly’s life was defined by her love and devotion to others. A proud and dedicated mother, she found immense joy in supporting her daughter, Emily, a junior at Rice University. Her family was her greatest treasure, and she cherished every moment spent with her husband, David, their daughter, and their beloved dogs. Kelly was a devoted rescuer of animals, and her home was always filled with the love of her furry companions. She is survived by three dogs—Dora, Pepper, and Jackson—and famously declared that her marriage to David required one non-negotiable condition: their home would always include a miniature schnauzer.
Kelly also found joy in life’s simple pleasures—gardening, date nights with David, and dancing to 80s music. But her happiest moments were shared in meaningful conversations with family and friends, where her warmth, thoughtfulness, and compassion shone brightest. Whether mentoring colleagues, supporting friends, or caring for her family, Kelly’s life was a testament to love, thoughtfulness, and making the world around her just a little bit better.
Professionally, Kelly devoted over three decades of her life to Rice University, where she most recently served as Assistant Vice President for Campaign and Constituent Strategy. Her work was instrumental in transforming the university, from leading impactful fundraising campaigns to planning hallmark events like the university’s centennial celebration and the investiture of Rice University President Reginald DesRoches. Kelly’s strategic vision and genuine care for her colleagues earned her deep respect across the Rice community. Her colleagues fondly recall her calming presence, meticulous attention to detail, and ability to make every project or interaction special.
Kelly is survived by her husband of 21 years, David; her daughter, Emily; her mother, Barbara Newsom; her brother, Kevin Newsom; and her cherished dogs. She leaves behind a legacy of love and inspiration that will endure in the hearts of her family, friends, and colleagues.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either Rice University or to the John S. Dunn Burn Unit at Memorial Hermann hospital.
Kelly’s kindness, creativity, and unwavering dedication to others will continue to inspire all who knew her. Her life was a blessing, and her memory will forever be cherished.
