Katy Jewett, a proud fifth-generation Houstonian, died on Friday, the 21st of July 2023, at the age of 43, younger than she should have but later than expected. Considering that she had lived through cancer twice, almost being murdered, the horror of drunk drivers, and a lifetime of questionable decision-making, the fact that she lived as long as she did is a wonder.
Katy was born to Charley and Joanna Jewett of Houston, and the SEC, both now happily divorced. She was a mediocre student throughout an Episcopalian education, who excelled at acting and very little else.
After graduating from the University of Houston, she cast around for employment, ultimately finding success at Dell and discovering in the process an interest and lifetime fascination with technology.
Katy switched careers at 32 – having had cancer will do that to a person. For the rest of her life, she worked to elect Democrats up and down the ticket, from the Chief of the Cherokee Nation to Presidents of the United States. Katy loved her country, and dedicated her life to trying to make it better for everyone who lived in it.
She married at 38 to Jay Malone, who joined her in the fight for equal justice for all Americans. She was an active volunteer on multiple Democratic campaigns, ballot initiatives, and for women’s health care access. She was also an active volunteer at Omega House in Houston.
Katy was a steadfast and lifelong friend to Elizabeth Eakin, Dylan Lee, Anouk Goreta, and Ryan Brown. In adulthood, she added to that list. She had a gift for friendship, and a happy curiosity that made it easy for her to turn acquaintances into friends. She was a devoted caretaker for many cats, and frequently took her domestic long-haired companion Simon with her around the country from campaign to campaign.
She is preceded in death by remarkable women: her Aunty Dottie Lytle; her Aunt Karen Hendricks; her Mimi Mary Jewett; and her Granny Martha Ferrell.
Katy leaves behind her husband Jay; and cats Simon and Usain Bolt; as well as her parents, siblings, in-laws, and a constellation of family both blood related and chosen.
A celebration in honor of the life of Katy Jewett is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Sunday, the 13th of August, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
In addition to customary remembrances and flowers, the family requests with gratitude that donations be directed to a Democratic campaign; or to the Entertainment Community Fund and support the actors on strike (find more information at sagaftrastrike.org). Katy would also like for you to go vote.
