Karl Allyn Hieber, 79, entered eternal rest December 13, 2014. Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1935 he resided in Detroit, Michigan for many years prior to his move to the Kingwood area of Houston in the 70’s.
Karl attended Elmhurst College and studied Business and Accounting. His resume included Thompson Steel in Chicago where he rose to Management and was chosen to establish their new plant in Roseville, Michigan. Karl was General Manager of Thompson Steel for many years before his entrepreneurial spirit inspired him to found Strip Steel in Frasier, Michigan, Alkar Steel Corporation in Warren,Michigan and later Gulf States Steel and Republic Iron Works in Houston, Texas. Some of his more notable projects included The George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Exxon Chemical, The Crescent in Dallas, 3M in Austin and The Galleria in Metairie, La. After closing his business in Houston, he worked as an Accountant for several companies in the Houston area.
Karl’s large family was geographically spread throughout the USA and although most were not nearby, it was obvious they were always in his thoughts. His love of family was frequently evidenced by detailed stories of the escapades of his children, brothers and others. Karl never met a stranger and relished sharing his endless supply of stories and jokes, all stamped with his unique sense of humor. On his daily walks with his dog, Molly, he enjoyed chatting with his neighbors and thought of them as friends. In his younger years, Karl liked to play golf but recently came to realize he was better suited to ride in the cart with his son-in-law, Steve and analyze his game. He liked watching football and spent many years cheering the Houston Oilers as a season ticket holder. Watching TV was his passion and when home, the TV was always on. His insatiable sweet tooth was always getting him into trouble. The local jelly doughnut shop knew him by his first name. To avoid detection, he often stopped by Susie’s house to dispose of the evidence before returning home. A favorite activity in recent years was “Grammy & Papa Day” every week with twins, Mariana and Christian; dinner out, ice cream, Kit Kats and games were always involved.
Karl is survived by his wife, Helen Hieber, the love of his life for 39 years; children: Chetney Hieber & wife Marilyn, Nancy Hammond, Daniel Hieber, Keith Hieber, Glenn Hieber, Sue-Anne Casey & husband Steve, Jaime Torres & husband Carl and Danette Wood & husband Donald; grandchildren: Bradley, Matthew, Michael, Zachary, Joshua, Christian & Mariana; great-granddaughter: Julia; brothers: Herb & Ken Hieber.
