August 19, 1928 – May 26, 2012
Kam Chee Wong, 84, beloved by her family and friends, went to be with the Lord on May 26, 2012. She was born on August 19, 1928 in Canton Province, Toishan County of China. She was one of four girls and one brother. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Yook Hon Wong, son Henry and wife Donna, son James and wife Cherry, daughter Lena and husband Michael Chan, her grandchildren Steven Wong and wife Quynh, Raymond Wong and wife Lisa, Ana Chan, Alex Chan, Aaron Chan, and Jessica Duncan. Her great-grandchildren are Joshua Wong, Katherine Wong, Lauren Wong, Madison Wong and Kaitlynn Duncan.
During her early years she was educated in Hong Kong when her family lived there a brief time. She attended Toy Shan Girl’s Normal School after moving back to Toishan and later taught school in her village.
In March 1947, she married Yook Hon whom she had been introduced to by a friend. At that time Yook Hon was employed as a supervisor in Toy-Shen Bus Company. Within the first year they were blessed with their first born son, Henry. In 1949 they welcomed their second son, James. In 1951 Yook Hon came to the United States and she moved her sons to Hong Kong. She raised her boys until 1959 when they all reunited as a family in Houston, Texas. In 1960 they were blessed with a daughter, Lena. Mr. Wong had created a successful grocery business, John’s Grocery in Houston. She quickly stepped in to assist with the business and raise her young family in her new homeland until they sold it in 1984.
Upon selling the business and retiring, they took several trips. Including one to New York to visit family and enjoy the sites. Then they took a trip of their lives to Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong and Hawaii. Another took them through eight countries in Europe. She enjoyed singing, reading, sewing, but most especially visiting with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She attended the Methodist church while in Hong Kong. Upon settling in Houston, she joined Chinese Baptist Church of Houston where she was baptized. Of which she has been a long standing member.
She will be sorely missed by all who knew her, but she once said, “I am so pleased with my life and I thank God for all He has provided to me throughout my life. “ In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to Chinese Baptist Church, 900 Brogden, Houston, Texas 77024.
