Joe married the love of his life, Lena Marie Danna, on June 17, 1945. Just this June, they celebrated their 67th anniversary. Joe leaves behind his wife, Lena and his four children and their spouses: Jeannine & Joe Madden, Frank and Debbie Mandola, Dee Mandola & Judy Ingram and Sam Mandola. Joe also leaves his eight grandchildren and their spouses: Janna & Sam Moore, Jeff & Holley Madden, Jennifer & Gregg Abernathy, Alicia & TJ Clark, Jacquelyn & Bryan Hinojosa, Joseph Mandola, Lauren & Jaimie Marquez and Michelle Mandola and 15 great grandchildren: Sam & Max Moore, Jackie, Joe Rick, Ben, Abby & Charlie Abernathy, Paulina & Tommy Clark, Lauryn, Madelyn & Ross Hinojosa & Olivia Marquez.
Joe attended Austin High School in Houston, Texas. He served in the 287th Tank Battalion in the US Army and returned home to partner with his brother Bat in a grocery store. After grocery store days, Joe went to work for American Wine. The wine business awakened a new passion in Joe. He fell in love with his new career, reading, studying, traveling – truly becoming a wine connoisseur. Joe went on to work for Quality Beverage and Glazer Distributors.
Joe was a member of the Twenty Club and the Sacred Heart Society, but was most proud of his involvement with the Italian-American Federation. Joe served as President of the Federation and was a member of Il Cavaliere – the American Society of the Italian Legion of Merit. The Italian Consulate awarded Joe with the title of “Cavalieri.”
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm, with a Rosary at 7:00 pm in the Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Directors, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77024. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at 10:00 am at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc Drive, Houston, Texas 77024. Interment will follow in the Garden of Gethsemani at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, Texas 77023.
