Jose Luis Lopez

Jose Luis Lopez Carranza, “Mr. Lopez,” passed into peaceful rest on Thursday, December 14, 2023. The son of Estanislado Lopez and Alberta Carranza, Jose Luis was the seventh of nine children. He is preceded in death by his beloved mother and father; his siblings Maria Luisa, Manuel, Carmen, Cecilio, Ascencion y Demencio; his first wife, Maria Garcia Lopez; his son, Luis Eduardo Lopez; his former companion, Caroline Pacheco; and several half-siblings.

Mr. Lopez was born in Compandaro, Michoacan, Mexico on August 25, 1940. Starting at the young age of 15, Mr. Lopez began his career as a butcher at the Maclovio Herrera Market in Nuevo Laredo. He immigrated to the United States from Mexico in 1965, bringing only his humble roots and the desire to work. From 1970 to 1976, Mr. Lopez served as an apprentice butcher at the former Sheraton Hotel on Lincoln Street in Houston.

In 1977, Mr. Lopez opened Gerardo’s Drive-In Grocery, a quintessential establishment in Houston’s Northside community. When Mr. Lopez founded the grocery store, he noticed that the community around him was lacking authentic barbacoa, so he devoted himself to excelling at the signature dish that is still celebrated in Houston's Mexican American community and throughout the state: tacos de barbacoa. His “world-famous” barbacoa has traveled from Texas to Alaska, to Australia, and beyond. Visitors, including several political figures, from Congressmen to the Speaker of the House, have stopped in to savor his barbacoa.

"Al vapor, no la hagas boil.” Barbacoa was special at Gerardo’s because Mr. Lopez took extra care with each piece of meat. Using an entire cow head, Mr. Lopez created Houston’s signature barbacoa tacos by slow-cooking the meat with steam, not boiling it. Mr. Lopez believed that slow steaming the meat is what rendered the traditional taste and consistency. Before the pandemic in 2020, Mr. Lopez made sure that Gerardo’s was open every day of the week, 365 days a year, but even then, barbacoa was saved for only Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. More recently, the store, which has transitioned to a restaurant, is only open Friday through Sunday, and while other kinds of tacos and dishes are on the menu, Mr. Lopez’s tender beef is still the heart of his business. From the very beginning, Mr. Lopez, or “Don Luis” as many would call him, and Gerardo’s Drive-In, became a part of the neighborhood, and everyone knew where to buy the best barbacoa.

Despite his many health problems later in life, Mr. Lopez kept working and insisted on visiting the store as often as possible. His heart and soul are still alive in the store today thanks to the many visitors who come from near and far to taste real barbacoa. It is well known in Houston that if you want true barbacoa, the only place to go is Gerardo’s, which is why people get in line at 6:00 am to get their orders in early.

Mr. Lopez and Gerardo’s have been featured in several news articles and magazines, including almost every news station in Houston, Texas Monthly, Houston Press, Better Homes, and the Houston Chronicle. Gerardo’s and Mr. Lopez’s traditional cooking style have also been highlighted by countless cookbooks and blogs. Never one to boast or advertise, the news about the barbacoa at Gerardo’s spread simply by word of mouth. Mr. Lopez was a staple in Houston’s Northside and a community legend because of his cooking and his kind nature. This is why many of his employees, like his right-hand man, Manuel Martinez, have stayed by his side for decades.

Mr. Lopez was an avid baseball fan who loved the sport in general, but he loved his Astros most of all. Together with his sons Felix and Gerardo, Mr. Lopez traveled to see many baseball games throughout his life. His favorite pastime was watching the Astros play, either in person or live on TV.

Mr. Lopez is survived by his loving wife, Janie Guzman Lopez; three children: Felix L. Pacheco, Luis Gerardo Lopez and Angelita Turner; five grandchildren: Fallon Claire, Dominic Luis, Madeleina Kennedy, Vivianne Grace, and Helena Caroline; brothers, Jose Guadalupe Lopez and Jesus Lopez ; sister, Juanita Borrego, and countless extended family members and friends.

Visitation with the family will be held at Forest Park Lawndale, 6900 Lawndale St, Houston, TX 77023, on Tuesday, December 26, 2023. A requiem mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 4918 Cochran St, Houston, TX 77009, on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at 11:00 am, with burial to follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery at 1:00 pm.

José Luis López Carranza, “Sr. López”, descansó pacíficamente el Jueves 14 de Diciembre del 2023. Hijo de Estanislado López y Alberta Carranza, José Luis fue el séptimo de nueve niños. Le precedieron en la muerte sus amados padres; sus hermanos María Luisa, Manuel, Carmen, Cecilio, Ascención y Demencio; su primera esposa, María García López; su hermano, Luis Eduardo Lopez; su ex compañera, Carolina Pacheco; y varios medios hermanos.

El Sr. López nació en Compandaro, Michoacán, México en el 25 de Agosto de 1940. A partir de la temprana edad de 15 años, el Sr. López inició su carrera como carnicero en el Mercado Maclovio Herrera en Nuevo Laredo. Él emigró a los Estados Unidos desde México en 1965, trayendo sólo sus raíces humildes y las ganas de trabajar. De 1970 a 1976, el Sr. López trabajó como aprendiz de carnicero en el antiguo Hotel Sheraton en Lincoln Street en Houston.

A pesar de sus muchos problemas de salud posteriores en su vida, el Sr. López siguió trabajando e insistió en visitor la tienda con la mayor frecuencia posible. Su corazón y su alma siguen vivos hoy en la tienda gracias a los muchos visitantes que vienen de cerca y de lejos para probar la auténtica barbacoa. Es bien conocido en Houston que si quieres verdadera barbacoa, el único lugar al que debes ir es Gerardo's, por eso la gente hace fila desde las 6:00 am para recibir sus pedidos temprano. El Sr. López y Gerardo han aparecido en varios artículos de noticias y revistas, incluyendo casi todas las estaciones de noticias de Houston, Texas Monthly, Houston Press, Better Homes y Crónica de Houston. El estilo de cocina tradicional de Gerardo y el Sr. López también ha sido destacado por innumerables libros de cocina y blogs. Su pasatiempo favorito era ver jugar a los Astros, ya sea en persona o en vivo por el televisión.

Al Sr. López le sobreviven su amada esposa, Janie Guzmán López; tres hijos: Félix L. Pacheco, Luis Gerardo López y Angelita Turner; cinco nietos: Fallon Claire, Dominic Luis, Madeleina Kennedy, Vivianne Grace y Helena Caroline; hermanos, Jose Guadalupe López y Jesús López; hermana, Juanita Borrego, e innumerables familiares y amigos.

El velorio con la familia se llevará a cabo en Forest Park Lawndale, 6900 Lawndale St, Houston, TX. 77023, el Martes 26 de Diciembre del 2023. Se llevará a cabo una misa de réquiem en la Iglesia Católica de San Patricio, 4918 Cochran St, Houston, TX 77009, el Miércoles 27 de Diciembre del 2023, a las 11:00am, y el entierro se realizará en el cementerio Forest Park Lawndale a la 1:00 pm.
