Johnny C. Pope III

On August 22, 1956, in Houston, Texas, a baby boy was born to the proud parents Johnny C. Pope Jr. and Audrey J. Pope. They lovingly named him Johnny Calvin Pope III (JP). He was the second child of four. Johnny accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Pure Light Missionary Baptist Church, under the pastorship of the Late Rev. Joseph Brown Sr. There he served as a junior usher. Many years later JP joined Greater Pure Light Missionary Baptist Church, under the pastorship of Rev. Darryl Broussard, where he served as the president of the usher board for a period. In 2019 JP joined Greater Mt. Lebanon under the leadership of Pastor A.B. Walker, where he served as an usher.

Johnny was educated in the Houston Independent School District and graduated from Kashmere Senior High School in 1974. JP was first employed by Borden Ice Cream Company at the age of 14. He tried his hand at various jobs, until he finally settled at the United States Postal Service where he retired with 30 plus years under his belt. In 1977, Johnny met and married Mellanies Walker and to this union 2 daughters were born, Alisha and Mellanies and he gained 2 sons, Johnnie, and Damon. Johnny later met Deborah Whitaker and together they had 5 children: Jessica, Jay C., JaLisa, Johnny, and Jasmine.

Johnny enjoyed life and could often be found barbecuing those melt in your mouth ribs he was known for. Johnny departed this life on April 25, 2021. He was preceded in death by his father Johnny C. Pope Jr. He leaves to cherish his memories, his mother Audrey Pope; siblings: Charmain Armstrong, George Pope and Youlanda Britten (Jeff); children: Johnnie Walker, Damon Walker (Chantee), Alisha Broom (LaQuinton), Mellanies Shaw, Jessica Whitaker, Jay C. Whitaker, JaLisa Whitaker, Johnny C. Pope IV (Destinee), and Jasmine Pope; grandchildren: John, Christopher, Zoe, Skylar, Imari, Quinton, J'Micah, Dominick, Zavier, Amya, Alyssa, Jayden, Nyla, Kanecia, Quenzell, Kniyah, Khing, Peyton Tobar, Carmisha, CaMora, & Carmiyyah. A special friend and confidant Vicki Sneed of Tennessee along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of other family members and friends.
