John graduated from Austin High School in 1958 and the University of Texas in 1962 with a BBA in accounting. He moved to Houston in 1962 and practiced accounting with T.B. Trotter until 1967, when he started working for Texas Commerce Bank. He was with the bank until 1980 serving as Senior Vice President and head of their Trust Department. In 1980, he left the bank to start his own accounting firm, Smith and West. He retired from practice in 2002.
Mr. West is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lynn Painter West, his twin daughters, Elizabeth Ann West and Carrie Lynn West and his son, John Painter West. Survivors also include his sister, Jean West and his brother, James West, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harry and Penny Painter, his nephews, nieces and dear friends.
A memorial service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon, on Wednesday, the 23rd of April in the chapel of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the nearby Hines-Baker room.
