John Allen Snider, age 74, was born January 15, 1941, in Canton, Illinois, to John Robert and Helen Bernice (Schroyer) Snider. He passed away at his residence in Houston, Texas, surrounded by family, on Friday, May 15, 2015.
John met Jackie Fulwood at the Suwanee Nazarene Campmeeting, in July, of 1961. They fell in love and were married on December 29, 1962, at the Gainesville, Florida, First Church of the Nazarene.
John was a preaching Evangelist at the age of 9. He held revivals across America for many years prior to their marriage and then they pastored Churches of the Nazarene in High Springs and Tampa, Florida; and Aurora and Montrose, Colorado. He was responsible for starting the Church of the Nazarene in Plano, Texas and in Waxahachie, Texas.and served on the Advisory Board for the Houston District and South Texas District Church of the Nazarene. He also served as Chairman of the Finance Committee for those Districts for 19 years.
John attended Trevecca Nazarene University, in Nashville, Tennessee, and graduated from Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science, in 1972. John and Jackie owned and operated the Rudolph Snider Funeral Home, in Waxahachie, Texas, from 1975-1982. John served on the Waxahachie City Council from 1980-1985 and during his tenure, was Mayor Pro Tem, in 1982 and Mayor, from 1983-1985. He then ran for the Texas State Rep for the 4th District, in 1985. John was employed with Service Corporation International as President of Heights Funeral Home; Area Vice President; and Vice President for the Houston Market for Client Satisfaction, from 1987 until his retirement, in 2005. Following his retirement, he became a Consultant with SCI and remained in that position until his passing. John's many years of experience and his infinite wisdom made him a valuable asset to the funeral profession. He was chosen Funeral Director of the Year for the Texas Funeral Director Association, in 2002, and served on the Board of Directors for three years; President of the Houston Metropolitan Funeral Directors Association for two years; President for the Southeast Texas Funeral Directors Association for one year; Funeral Director of the Year for the Southeast Texas Funeral Director Association, in 2001; and served on the Advisory Board of Directors for Commonwealth Institute of Mortuary Science for 10 years.
John is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Jacquelyn Snider; children: Rev. Byron & Rev. Dana (Snider) Brown, of Huntsville, Alabama; Shane & Melanie Snider, of Tomball, Texas; and Brent & Dr. JoAnna (Snider) Anderson, of Spring, Texas; (8) grandchildren: Tiffany Snider Gresak and husband Todd, Tahlor Snider, Brianna Brown, Rawley Anderson, Austin Brown, Trase Snider, Owen Anderson and John Harris Anderson; and one great-granddaughter, Brooklynn Layne Gresak, who is due to arrive in June of 2015. He is also survived by siblings, Ruth Hopper; Paul R. Snider & wife, Betty; and Charlotte Moore, all of Kankakee, Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 21, 2015, from 4:00-8:00PM, in the Chapel of Heights Funeral Home, 1317 Heights Boulevard, Houston, TX 77008. Funeral Services will be Friday, May 22, 1015, 11:00AM, at Houston First Church of the Nazarene, 10001 West Sam Houston Parkway, Houston, TX 77064. Rev. Matt Hawkins and Rev. Byron Brown will officiate. Interment will follow in Memorial Oaks Cemetery. Serving as Pallbearers: Marc Moore, Ray Shotwell, Dennis Cooper, Foster B. Cook, Lyman Stanton, Ray Anderson and Chet Copley. Honorary Pallbearers: R. L. Waltrip, Texas State Rep. Debbie Riddle, Texas State Rep. Dan Flynn, Farzaneh Banki, MD, Jody Brandenburg, Larry Gardner, Darlene Payne Smith, David Jones, Todd Gresak and John and Jackie's eight Grandchildren.
