John Snavely lived a humble life, but one filled with great adventure. He was born on October 20, 1950, in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, to parents John and Janet Snavely. They became missionaries to South Africa when John was eight years old.
After growing up on the mission field, John attended Wheaton College in Illinois, where he pioneered the cinematography program and graduated with a BA in Communications. He caught the cinematography bug and decided to become a Director of Photography. In his career, he made 16 feature films, traveled to over 24 countries, worked with many well-known producers, actors, and sports personalities, such as Hakeem Olajuwon, Nolan Ryan, and Bum Phillips. His work spanned across industries and included feature films, an Imax production, offshore oil rig work for BP, TV programs including Judge Alex, TV commercials for NASA, Astroworld, Splashtown, and Papa John’s. His true passion became “warfare through media,” hoping to spread the truth of Jesus through videos he made with Mission Imperative and Men of Valor.
Shortly after graduating college, he moved to Houston where he met Jackie Daly, and they married on February 10, 1979. Even as John made his way around the country and the world making movies, he and Jackie added three wonderful daughters to their family. He personally enjoyed tinkering to invent new creations, working on puzzles, cooking big pots of gumbo and racks of ribs, and spending time laughing with family.
John kept a clever sense of humor and always shared with others the hope that he had in Jesus. He stubbornly fought cancer for 18 months, and passed peacefully on May 9, 2022, surrounded by family.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie; parents John and Janet Snavely; and his eldest daughter, Melinda. Left to carry on his legacy are daughters Tiffany and Michelle and their respective husbands, John and Chris. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Jeramiah, Catherine, Rebecca, and Ziva; and siblings Rob, Mike, Mary Kay, and Ann; and a host of close friends.
John’s memorial service will be held at Second Baptist Church’s Woodway campus on May 25th at 10:00 a.m., with a reception to follow.
