John Richard Sloan,76, of Houston, Texas, passed away November 9, 2020, with his beloved wife of nearly 51 years, Elisabeth Herzog Sloan and his three daughters at his side after almost a three-week hospital stay.
John was born on Father’s Day in Seattle, Washington on June 18,1944, to John L. Sloan and Mary Sloan. During his childhood, he lived in Portland, OR, and the surrounding areas of Seattle, WA. He graduated from Mt. Rainer High School in Des Moines, WA. While in high school, he worked on John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign and was a delegate at the Democratic convention. John continued to be active in politics throughout his life. John enlisted into the Marines, where he served in Vietnam 66-68 after earning a Bachelor of Education from Seattle University.
John had a career in financial planning for over 30 years with Standard Insurance Company. While working, he lived in Spokane, WA, Portland, OR, and Spring, TX. John’s passions were his family, his church, his community, and service to others. He enjoyed traveling all over the world with his wife Elisabeth, his children, grandchildren, and extended family, who enjoyed all the adventures. He volunteered as a mentor, a lay chaplain for Apostleship of the Sea, and for mission trips to Guatemala. He was active in the Catholic church, which he loved. John was a man of faith evidenced by his words and actions. He was an example of a life well lived in faith, family, and citizenship. John was a member of the Marine CorpsLeague and continued to live the motto always faithful, Semperfi. When he wasn’t with family or volunteering, he would golf and spend time fishing. John lived his life with no regrets, except maybe to have had more time with his loved ones.
John is survived by his daughters, Erin Sloan ( Robert ) Langham, Heidi Sloan(Carlos) Chelala, Sarah Sloan (Brian) Stanga, his son, Joseph Martin Sloan, his grandchildren, Sloane, Reese, and Carter Langham, Valentina, Giancarlo, Santiago and Ivanna Chelala, Avery, Ella and Benjamin Stanga, and Tristan and Jayden Sloan, his siblings Joan Lewitt, James (Ann) Sloan, Marilyn (Bruce) Amer and brother in law Donald Holman and numerous, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. He will be missed by us all.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Sloan, his sisters Marguerite ‘Peggy’ Holman, and Patricia Sloan, who died as an infant, and his brother in law Leonard ’Red’ Lewitt.
Rosary and visitation will be Tuesday, November 17, 2020,from 5-7pm at Brookside Funeral Home – Champions 3410 Cypress Creek Parkway, Houston, Texas 77068.
Funeral Mass is Wednesday, November 18, 2020, at 11 am at St Ignatious Loyala Catholic Church, 7810 Cypresswood Drive Spring, Texas 77379.
He will have a private burial at the Houston Veterans Cemetery.
