At the age of eight, he and his mother moved to Oakland, California where he attended public school. He graduated from McClymonds High School, Class of 1961. Upon graduating, he enlisted in the United States Army in July 1961 and faithfully served his country for 5 years.
He began his undergraduate education at Stephen F. Austin University and completed his studies by earning his Bachelor of Arts degree at Prairie View A&M University in May 1972. After graduating with a Business Administration degree, he began his employment with Exxon Mobil Marketing Department. He owned and operated an Exxon Service and Repair station in Houston, Texas.
After leaving the oil and gas industry, he began a career path in education. He taught Elementary school students at Love Elementary and Frost Elementary in Houston Independent School District. He completed 13 years of teaching until his retirement in 2006. He enjoyed retired life by reading, gardening and spending time with family. He married the love of his life Sherry Colston on June 12, 1976. They have two children, a son Jason Skillern and a daughter Melissa Skillern Thomas. He was a devoted husband and father.
He was an active member at St. James Missionary Baptist Church. He devoted his time and energy to faithfully serving as Sunday School Superintendent for several years, a member of the Trustee Board, janitor of the church and loyal and dutiful deacon.
He leaves to cherish his memory: His loving wife Sherry Skillern; son Jason Skillern, and daughter Melissa Skillern Thomas (DeMarcus). Grandchildren: Javon Garcia, Joslyn Skillern, Kara Hemphill, Kylela Skillern and Egypt Thomas. Brothers: Ricky Robinson (Octavia) and Steven Robinson (Vangie); Goddaughter: Amber Blackman. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. His memory will live on in all the hearts who loved him.
