As a young boy John attended schools in the Houston Independent School District. He was a quiet and independent person with a big smile. As a young man, John was a hard worker. His first job was as a gas station attendant, working with his best friend. He also worked for several years for a container distribution company, which was a subsidiary of Maxwell House Coffee. He later worked at Baker Hughes as a forklift driver until he suffered a stroke in 2007.
John loved socializing and being with family, especially during holidays and special occasions. His loves in his leisure time were basic. They consisted of playing a challenging game of cards or dominoes, participating in a good game of basketball and other sports, eating a fabulous meal (preferably fried chicken) followed by viewing popular cowboy movies from the sixties and seventies.
Additional health issues cost John his independence several years ago and he moved to Woodridge Nursing and Rehabilitation in Spring Branch. He lived there from 2013 until his death. He quietly departed this life on Wednesday, February 20, 2020 at Hermann Memorial Hospital, Memorial City. He will be lovingly remembered.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Anna Louisa; his brothers, Joseph James, Billy Joe and Willie Jr.
He leaves fond memories to his brother; Melvin (Susan); his sister in law, Sharon Johnson; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
