John Reinhardt Hickman—a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, —was born in San Antonio, Texas on June 11, 1939. He passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. He was 84 years old.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Pochmann and Thomas Allen Hickman, his son, Rodney Craig Hickman, and his siblings, Anna Schroeder, LaDell Brown, and Gerald Allen Hickman.
He is survived by his life-long love and high school sweetheart, Virginia, whom he married on December 20th, 1958. Their enduring love story, spanning a remarkable 65 years, served as an inspiration to all who knew them. His memory also lives on in the hearts of his surviving children, John Randall Hickman, Leah Lanell Anderson and her husband Kevin, and Chad Montgomery Hickman and his wife Dawn.
John left behind a rich legacy in his grandchildren: Brian and his wife Ashley, Lindsey and her husband Adam, Jacob, Jennifer, Justin, Gavin, and Tiffany. His great-grandchildren, Laylee, Ruby, Franklin, Asher, and Austen, will grow up hearing the stories of their great-grandfather's love for life and endless pranks. John is survived by numerous other family members and friends, including the “family” of Spring Baptist Church, where he and Virginia have been members for over 40 years.
Born in Texas, he joined the Navy while in high school. After a year of service, he was stationed in Pearl Harbor in 1958. His naval experience shaped him into a man of resilience and discipline, traits he carried throughout his life.
An avid fisherman, John spent significant time at his “fish house” on the bay in Rockport, Texas. This house served as the backdrop for many cherished family memories. His love for the sea was not just a hobby, but a way of life, which was evident in his 27 years as a business owner—alongside wife Virginia—of Captain's Choice Seafood Restaurant and Market.
John was known for his sense of humor, his love for people, and his role as a provider for his family. His life was a testament to his hard work, resilience, and love for his family. His memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and the community he served.
Even though he is no longer with us, John's spirit continues to inspire and guide us. We celebrate his joyful reunion with our Lord and Savior and find comfort knowing Heaven is his home. He will be dearly missed.
