John Frederick Hagaman, 78, of Houston, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, the 16th of September 2017. He passed away peacefully at Houston Hospice on Holcombe following a long illness. John loved his family and his friends both in Houston and in Newport, Rhode Island, and they loved him back. He was by nature a considerate gentleman to everyone and true romantic. John 's most cherished times were entertaining friends and family at his and Sheila's home in Newport, Rhode Island and playing golf at his beloved Newport Country Club and BraeBurn Country Club in Houston. He was always the life of the party with his colorful jokes and melodic songs, until vocal cord cancer diminished his voice in 2006.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and raised in Larchmont, New York, John graduated from The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey in 1957 and Dartmouth College in New Hampshire in 1961. At Dartmouth, he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. John began his career in real estate with Humble Oil (now Exxon). Later, he became a real estate broker in Houston with R.T. Marshall Commercial Real Estate Company. Loving real estate, he eventually established Hagaman Commercial Real Estate Brokerage and Consultation, specializing in land for development.
John was the devoted husband of Sheila Reeves Gremillion Hagaman for 27 years.
He was the father of Elizabeth Hagaman, Jennifer Griffin and Cynthia Hagaman; and the grandfather of Campbell Griffin IV. He also left behind his cousin (brother) Fred H. Benners and wife Betsy and Rick Benners and wife Allison and sons Tripp and Will. John was the step-father of Michelle Gremillion Elliott with husband Greg and step-grandfather of their son Benjamin. John was predeceased in death by his parents, Frederick Purnell Hagaman and Hilda Bienvenue Hagaman. Friends are cordially invited to greet the family during a memorial reception to be held from half-past one o’clock until half-past two o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 22nd of September, in the grand foyer of Geo H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive, in Houston. Immediately following, the memorial service is to be conducted in the adjacent Jasek Chapel.
Prior to the services the family will have gathered for a private interment at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers during Friday’s service for John are Campbell Griffin, Biff Perdue, Barney Hedrick, Chuck Caldwell, Bubba Hudson and Ellis Locher.
John was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2008. In lieu of customary remembrance, memorial contributions, in his memory, may be directed to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, 469 7th Ave, 498, New York, New York 10018.
