John “Phil” Phillip Carpenter III, 66, of Houston, Texas passed away on March 16, 2019. Phil was born February 27, 1953 in Baton Rouge, LA and grew up in New Orleans, LA. He graduated high school from Sam Barthe in Metairie, LA where he was an outstanding three-sport letterman in football, track and basketball. He accepted a football scholarship to the University of Utah to play tight end and linebacker until a knee injury ended his football career. He transferred to the University of Southwestern Louisiana and graduated with a degree in BSBA-Management. He was an active member of the Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity.
Phil spent his entire career in the oil industry. He participated in many oilfield associations, charity events and golf tournaments during his 40 years of service. He treasured the lifelong relationships he developed throughout his career.
He loved to travel, play golf, the beach, casino trips and family time. He was an avid LSU Tiger and New Orleans Saints fan. Attending Super Bowl XLIV and watching his Saints win, as well as, making a hole-in-one at River Oaks Country Club were experiences of a lifetime.
Phil was a kind, generous, considerate, thoughtful, caring and selfless man. He was a man of courage, strength and integrity. He never knew a stranger. While struggling with his health issues, he always maintained a positive attitude. He was loved, respected and admired by all.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John “Big John” Phillip Carpenter, Jr. and Juanita McSpadden Carpenter. Also, sister-in-law, Karen Sacco Stolte and his beloved dog Charlie.
Phil is survived by his loving wife, Kaylynn; his pride and joy, his son, John “Chase” Phillip Carpenter IV; brother, Mark Carpenter and wife Maureen; mother and father in-law Rose Marie and Charles Sacco, Sr.; in-laws, J.C. Stolte, Jr., Theresa and Ronald Dinges, Lori and Charles Sacco, Jr., Lisa and Raymond Walker, Sandra and Kyle Harding; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was blessed with a team of doctors that kept him going. Many thanks to the exceptional care and compassion of UT Physicians, Dr. Zeyad Kanaan, Dr. David D. McPherson, Dr. Salman Arain, Dr. Jaya Kala and their staff of numerous angels.
A very special thank you to his extraordinary UT Physician, Dr. Robert J. Amato and his staff. Their kindness, patience, optimism and compassionate care helped extend Phil’s life in his 20-year battle with kidney cancer. Words cannot express our gratitude.
