John R. Boettiger, Jr, age 40, passed away peacefully on Sunday, the 15th of May 2011, in Houston, Texas, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. John was born on the 18th of February 1971, in San Antonio, Texas, to Nancy Volz Boettiger and John R. Boettiger, Sr.
An avid outdoorsman his entire life, John spent his childhood hunting ducks and geese in the gulf coast marshes and his summers catching trout and redfish in the Gulf of Mexico. His love of nature and his desire to be a leader were strengthened in his early years through his service with The Boy Scouts of America. In 1986, John achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and in 1988, he received one of scouting’s highest honors, the Leadership in Action Award.
Following his graduation in 1989, from Brazoswood High School in Clute, Texas, John entered The University of Texas at Austin. He entered the McCombs School of Business and studied Accounting and Finance, receiving his Bachelor of Business Administration in 1992. Following graduation, John continued his education at UT by pursuing a Masters of Business Administration and received his graduate degree in 1994. John loved his years at The UniversityTexas, and was a devoted Longhorn sports fan.
John married Michele Kokos on the 30th of December 1993. The couple has been devoted friends each day forward. Following John’s graduation from Graduate Business School, John and Michele relocated to Houston, Texas to start their lives together.
Upon moving to Houston, John began his career with Deloitte Financial Advisory Services, LLP. John had a brilliant mind and a gift with numbers. These skills, combined with his love of people and boundless energy, made him one of the firm’s top business valuation professionals. He was venerated by his clients and peers alike, and was promoted to Principal after only seven years with the firm. John’s focus was valuation and transactions, and his designations included: Accredited Senior Appraiser by the American Society of Appraisers (ASA), a Certified Management Consultant(CMC) by the Institute of Management Consultants, and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)by the CFA Institute. John spent his entire professional career with Deloitte, and valued working with his fellow Partners on client projects, mentoring client service professionals at all levels, and advising clients on their business strategies.
In addition to being a devoted husband and father, John served his community with equal passion. He was a tireless volunteer for numerous business and charitable organizations, and served as a leader for many such groups, including Project SEARCH (Director), Crimestoppers of Houston (Director), The Immunization Partnership (Advisory Committee Member), Sam Houston Area Council, Boy Scouts of America (Director). John’s service leadership wasn’t just limited to Houston. In 2008, he was named one of the Five Outstanding Young Texans by the Texas Jaycees in 2008. That same year he was elected the Chairman of the Texas Lyceum Association, the State of Texas’ top professional business organization. In 2009, John was named by the Houston Business Journal to its Inaugural Class of 40 under 40.
Despite the challenges of his illness, John never waivered in his faith in God. He was passionate about his Catholic faith and was a living example for others who seek to live a Christian way of life. It was through his faith that John passionately loved the world and sought to make it a better place. John and his brother, Jeff, were Third Degree members of the Knights of Columbus together in the St. Angela Merici Council 14617.
John embraced all that life had to offer in his 40 years. He knew that a cup of coffee with his father in a duck blind was just as important as sitting in a conference room with a CEO or investment banker. He was quick with a smile and a laugh and always made sure that everyone he encountered felt important.
John is survived by his loving wife, Michele; his daughters, Amelia, Amber and Ava; his parents, Nancy and John R. Boettiger, Sr.; his brother, Jeffrey Boettiger and his wife, Kathleen, and their children, Samantha and Kaitlyn; his sister, Julie Boettiger Mullinax and her daughter, Parker.
