John Edward Blackmon, native Houstonian, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at the age of 77. He was born on August 23, 1946, and grew up with a large family and a love for sports that characterized his younger years. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School, Class of ‘65, and he looked forward to every class reunion and Pris’s class reunions thereafter.
He worked as an electrician (IBEW #716) for 60 years.
Later in life, he was actively involved in time with his family, especially sports games, birthdays, reunions, celebrations, and dinners. He loved to hunt, fish, cook venison, chili, and gumbo. Watch sports,boating, golfing, target practice, dance while he could, yo-yo, play jokes on us, laugh a lot, and participate in every campfire story. He taught sports (and life) to his children, grandson, Landon, and anybody else who would listen. He won every card, domino and board game and built two of his own homes. He loved doing projects and mini business opportunities with his son, John Ray.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Heloise Bunkley Blackmon and Montey Ray Blackmon, and brothers, Montey Nathaniel Blackmon, and Horace Mark Blackmon.
He is survived by his children and spouses, Kristin Blackmon Massey & Jeff Goldberg and John Ray & Nicole Blackmon, beloved grandchildren, Landon Massey, Emma Massey, Brian Goldberg, Aubrey Frey and Alyssa Eichhorn, sisters and spouses, Dianna Blackmon Sobala, Priscilla B. & Jerry Mouton, nephews and spouses, Ron Sobala & Irina Mitchell, Brandon Mark Blackmon and Justin Blackmon, nieces & spouses, Ronda S. & Richie Bland, and Autumn & Thane Matcek, great nieces, Ana Mitchell and Cassie Bland, great nephew, Chase Sobala, aunts & spouse, Mary Ellen & Claude Sirmons, Annette Blackmon, Linda Hoffman, and a host of unbelievable extended family, and friends.
The family would like to thank everyone for their care, compassion and time spent together throughout his lifetime as well as the pallbearers, Landon Massey, John Ray Blackmon, Brandon Blackmon, Justin Blackmon, Kenny McCormick, Ron Sobala, Joe Calhoun, Fayne Blair, Brian Goldberg and Jeff Goldberg.
