JOHN WILLIAM ALLEN, JR. “Jr. Man” was born February 14, 1948 to the late John William Allen, Sr. and Ruby Mae McDowell - Allen in Montgomery, Texas. From this marriage, John was the second born of five children. He attended elementary and middle school in Montgomery, Texas, and he later moved with his mother and sisters to Houston, Texas. He then attended school at Phillis Wheatley High School and graduated with a high school diploma in 1966.
AFTER graduating from high school, John met his true gem, his forever and beautiful, lifelong Queen, Peggy (Cookie) Greenleaf. They married and from this union, their daughter (Latonia) and their sons (Shawn and Kevin) were born. JOHN was employed by the City of Houston Fire Department and retired after thirty-seven (37) years of service. He obtained his insurance license and worked as an Insurance Agent for a global company for over 20 years. He also was a businessman and owned two companies named PJ&S Towing and A&B Auto. As of this year, John would have been retired from the City of Houston Fire Department for 20 years. During the time of his retirement, he enjoyed cooking barbecue, working on his baby (his 1968 Ford Mustang GT), going fishing, working outdoors around the house, traveling back and forth to Camilla / Coldspring, Texas, riding his tractor, and spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and family. JOHN accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior as an adult under the leadership of the late Rev. T. J. Compton, Sr., Pastor of Mt. Canaan Missionary Baptist Church. John served many years as a faithful servant at this church as a Chairman of the Deacon Board, a Sunday school teacher, and once served as a Secretary of the Brotherhood Ministry. He volunteered in the Bus Ministry as a bus driver as well. He remained a faithful member until he decided along with his wife to move their membership to New Light Church, because their new residence was in the area. At New Light Church, he participated with the study groups on Wednesday nights. He remained at New Light Church until God called him home. THOSE who welcomed John at the gate were his parents, John W. Allen, Sr. and Ruby Mae McDowell - Allen. Also, his brothers John Henry and Nathaniel Allen. JOHN leaves to cherish his memories of his beloved wife, Peggy J. Allen (Cookie); his children, Latonia S. Allen (Baby Girl), Shawn T. Allen (Bubba) (Yolanda), Kevin J. Allen (Baby Boy); his grandchildren, Charles R. Snowden III (Trey), Jasmine J. Snowden (Joy), Devonte W. Snowden (Dubee), Kiara S. Allen (Ki-Ki), and Shawn T. Allen, Jr. (SJ); his great-grandchildren, Anyaa S. Allen (Bam-Bam), Lexi R. Snowden (Pebbles), and Azrael W. Snowden (Peanut); his sisters, Elberta Joyce Fields (Joyce) and Ruby L. Washington (Ru), brother-in-love, Levi Greenleaf, Jr. (Eartha), sister-in-love, Katie Hunt; his best friends Levi (Eartha) Greenleaf, Rev. Artis (Vercy) Hall, Nathaniel Pearrie, Roy (Patricia) Limbrick, Donny (Ina) Hightower, Redow Bishop, Chief H.F.D. Tommy (Debbie) Shelton, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and loved ones.
A new light church for John will be held Friday, May 5, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at External Service Location, 1535 Greensmark Dr, Houston, TX 77067, followed by a new light church from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
