JoAnn Cude

JoAnn was born in Canton, Texas and moved to Houston Heights with her family where she graduated from Reagan High School in 1952. JoAnn was involved in playing sports. She loved volleyball, tennis and was a catcher on the softball team. JoAnn was a Christian woman and went to church for 50 years at Timber Grove Baptist Church until it closed. She then joined Spring Crest Baptist on Clay Road.

JoAnn started her career as a popcorn girl at the Sears at 4201 South Main Houston, the first building with an Escalator.

JoAnn met her husband Odell Cude at church where they played in the volleyball teams together. They married in 1954 and had 2 children, Adaila Jo and Gordon Ray. Before the children were born, she worked for Armco Steel/National Supply where she retired after 30 years. Then when National Oilwell Varco bought them, she worked part time/full time for another 20 years, so as you can tell she was a good faithful employee.

When the kids were young, her and her sister Geraldine coached one of Adaila's softball teams. They all had a great time and she enjoyed it so much. She never missed a game.

Adaila Jo says her mother gave her and Gordon Ray everything they ever asked for. Which by the way was a lot. Horses, motorcycles, surfboards, and cars. One day she proceeded to ride the horse. She went one direction, and the horse went another. We all laughed and helped her up. Then when it was her turn to ride the motorcycle, she let the clutch go too fast and did a pretty good wheelie without hurting herself. But when it came to cars, she loved the sporty ones. Adaila says her Mom was the bomb. In her younger days she could Rock the red hair, Black Velvet hot pants and knee boots. She was beautiful. JoAnn was a patient, kind, strong, hardworking loving woman.

JoAnn was someone who didn't like change. She lived in the same house, worked at the same job, bought all her cars at River Oaks Chrysler, and stayed married to the same man who was quite challenging. There were many difficult times, but she stayed strong and adapted.

She was the backbone of the family and withstood many hardships. But she was loved by all who knew her.

A visitation with the family was held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road in Houston, where services began at 11:00 a.m. in the RL Waltrip Venue, with Pastor Kay Pulley, officiating. Burial followed at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, also in Houston.
