Joan was born on March 28, 1929 in Vincennes, Indiana, the daughter of Frank Joseph Schmidt and Josephine (Duesterberg) Schmidt. She was their eldest daughter, joining her older brother Larry and later her younger sister Rosemary. She graduated from St. Rose Academy in Vincennes in 1947.
While living in Vincennes she met and then married her husband of 58 years, Edward Francis Janes, on May 30, 1960 at St. John the Baptist Church. After a few months in New York City, Joan and Ed moved to Houston in the fall of 1960 and later settled in Meyerland, where they raised their family and lived for 54 years before relocating to University Place Retirement Community. Joan was an active member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church, was heavily involved with Girl Scouts of America, and was a member of the Charity Guild of Catholic Women, where she helped to run their thrift shop for many years.
Joan is survived by her husband, Edward Francis Janes of Houston; her daughter Kathleen Janes Warfield (Robert) of Aptos, CA; her sons Edward Francis Janes, Jr. (Joan) of Atlanta, GA and Lawrence Clinton Janes (Leslie) of Houston; her grandchildren, Robert E. Warfield, Laura M. Warfield, Sydney K. Janes and Edward F. Janes III.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Lawrence G. “Larry” Schmidt and sister, Rosemary (Schmidt) McCarty, both of Vincennes, IN.
Joan S. Janes will be laid to rest on October 11, 2018 at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX 77077. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, followed by funeral service at 2PM and then committal service at the gravesite.
