Joan Y. Horton, age 81, passed away Saturday, September 25, 2010. Joan was born November 1, 1928 in Oklahoma City, the daughter of Harold and Lowe Young. An oilman, Harold adored Joan and frequently took her to the oil fields with him. The Young family moved to Long Beach, California and there she married her high school sweetheart, Bill Horton, in 1947 and shared 62 wonderful years together.
As members of the post-World War II community, they began building their family. Their children, Debra and Steven, were born while Joan helped Bill finish his college studies. His career in the oil industry moved the family to cities in California, Texas, Oklahoma, and New York City. Joan’s sense of adventure and excitement with these moves was a real blessing for the family.
Joan and Bishop Rizzotto inspired Bill to join the Catholic faith and they became active members of the St. Cecilia Church community. This association gave them a strong spiritual life and a genuine sense of fellowship.
Joan’s inner strength was too strong to succumb to advanced ovarian cancer or a stroke. Before her death from severe heart disease, she stated her faith in God gave her the courage to deal with whatever the future held for her. The family would like to thank Drs. Geri-lynn Fromm and Mark Yeoman for their compassionate care.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5 until 8 PM on Friday, October 1, 2010 in the Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Directors, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX with a Vigil Service to begin at 7 PM. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc, Houston, TX followed by a light reception in the community center. A graveside service and committal will follow in Memorial Oaks Cemetery, Houston, TX.
