Jessie Ann Barber passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Tuesday, December 13, 2022. Jessie was 92, a beloved matriarch of her large family and an inspiration to all who knew her. She was raised by her grandmother, Virginia Romero, and grandfather, Domingo Romero. She was born in Tularosa, New Mexico, and raised in Ruidoso where she later met her husband of 66 years, James Davis Barber. Jessie was a doctor’s assistant and worked in a drug store before becoming a full-time homemaker.
Jessie spent her time raising her growing family, spending time with her close friends the Kings and Richards families, and annual trips home to Ruidoso. She could often be found at school events and activities supporting her children and grandchildren, painting, enjoying her garden and flowers, and indulging her love of crochet, knitting, and tatting.
Jessie’s life was rooted in her faith. During her older children’s education, they attended Catholic school where she assisted and drove the Nuns anywhere they needed to go. In later years, all children attended public school where she worked on the PTA and Band Parents committees in addition to years of baseball activities with her boys. She continued to teach CCE at St. Mary Magdalene where she was a parishioner for 62 years. She was also a charter member of the Catholic Daughters – Court of the Cross #2374.
For the last thirty years, Jessie was surrounded by her close friends, the Lunch Bunch, that she and James had met at their cardio rehab gym. The group continues to meet to enjoy each other’s company and give one another support.
Jessie is survived by her children Sharon and husband Bennie, David and wife DeeDee, Dolores and husband Joe, and daughter-in-law Shelia; grandchildren Charles and wife Melissa, Scott and wife Stephanie, James and wife Judith, Leslie and husband Don, Travis and wife Kathy, Ann and husband Pedro, Traci and husband Eric, Jason and wife Angela, Virginia and husband Carlos, Bryan, Matthew, Tray and wife Erin, Michelle and husband Mike, Niki and husband Eric, and Erica; great-grandchildren Anisten, Evan, Kerra, Alaina, Luke, Mackinley, Mackayla, J.T., Jennifer, Kate, Heather, Tanner, Jake, Dylan, Dakota, Alexander, Olivia, Daphne, Carlos, Daniel, Eli, Mia, Ivy, Kaleo, Zoe, Regan and Ella; siblings Sylvia and husband Mel, Bobby and wife Pat, Ronnie, Gary and wife Katrina, Joe and wife Eva.
She is preceded in death by her husband James Davis Barber, grandmother Virginia Romero, grandfather Domingo Romero, sons James Hudie Barber and Daniel Allen Barber, grandson Ashton Days, mother Aurora Davalos, sisters Flora Mae Stanfield, Dolores Davalos, and Clara Campbell. Also preceded in death by several dearly beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A visitation will be held at Brookside Funeral Home Chapel from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00pm with a Rosary starting at 7:00PM on Tuesday, December 20th.
A funeral Mass will be held at St Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, 527 S Houston Ave, Humble, TX 77338 at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 21st. A procession after will be lead to the graveside burial at Brookside Funeral Home at 13747 Eastex Fwy, Houston, TX 77039. A reception will follow at Brookside Funeral Home.
