Jerry Edwin Welsh

Jerry Edwin Welsh was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska November 13, 1958 (carrying a baseball in one hand and spinning a basketball on the other, while holding a football between his feet) to Gerald and Roberta Welsh (Siders) joining a sister, Diane and gaining a brother, Rick and another sister, Judie a few years later. Jerry loved playing sports, fishing, and hunting throughout his childhood. He was also an avid bowler and made 300 several times. He has a lot of bowling trophies. He was a spectacular athlete. He was a Nebraska Husker fan and never missed a game if he could help it. He also liked the Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos and the Texans. He loved all sports, but baseball was his favorite and he even had a chance to try out for a pro baseball team (Cincinnati Reds) right after high school. We all want to know why he didn’t. His favorite team was the Astros.

Jerry graduated from Gering High School in Gering, Nebraska in 1977. In August of 1977, he married Karen Leis, also from Gering. They resided in Scottsbluff for a time until building their first home in Gering, where in 1979 they added a bouncing baby boy, Brock, to the family. Jerry worked at Swifts, Wayne Giles Steel buildings, and at Morton buildings while they lived in Nebraska. In 1985 they moved their family to Houston, Texas where they added a sweet daughter, Brooke, to the family in 1987. Jerry worked for Ray Epps Sprinkler Company, Earthtone, Martin Landscapes, and Spencer Company doing irrigation before opening his own irrigation company, Welsh’s Irrigation Inc., in 1995. Jerry loved life and spent it doing the things he loved with the people he loved. He took up golf and got pretty good at it. He also taught his wife to play, and they enjoyed spending time together or with friends on the golf course. He spent time with his children and friends hunting, fishing, and golfing and enjoyed traveling with family and friends. He enjoyed coaching his son’s little league teams and his daughter’s basketball team. He enjoyed watching his son run cross country and his daughter’s drill team and even got to dance with her twice on the field. He was always available to volunteer for his children’s activities. His crowning glory was his grandchildren, who called him” Papa”! They loved playing with him as he was willing to let them pretend that he was whatever they wanted. They climbed him, raced him, wrestled with him, played sports with him, or ate his lunch while he wasn’t looking. They played dolls with him, “did” his hair, or read books. He was always one of their most avid supporters in their endeavors by always being there.

Jerry accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and was baptized in Houston in 1985 and eventually served as a deacon at Autumn Creek Baptist Church in Houston. He went to be with his Lord, and Savior, Jesus Christ on November 27, 2021. He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Welsh and stepmother Janice Welsh. Grandparents Fred and Leola Meter, and Lester and Esther Welsh. He is survived by his mother, Roberta Siders, Wife, Karen, children, Brooke and Brock Welsh, siblings Diane Welsh, Rick Welsh and Judie Sauer and seven grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in care of the family.
