Jerry Alfred Davis of Houston, Texas, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 14, 2022, at 85 years of age. He was lovingly surrounded by his wife and children. Jerry was born on September 24, 1936, in Dallas, Texas, to Otis Ransom and Irma Chapmond Davis. Jerry went to Winters, Texas, schools until his senior year, when he graduated from Lubbock High School (incidentally, with Buddy Holly, the rock ‘n roll legend) in 1955.
In Lubbock, he worked his way through Texas Tech University as a butcher at Piggly Wiggly and served in the National Guard and Army Reserves for 7 years. He met his darling wife of nearly 60 years, Anita Gail Clonts, his senior year at Tech. Jerry and Gail were married on September 22, 1962. After graduating with a BBA in Accounting, he worked for EY, Ernst & Young, and retired as a partner after 33 years.
Jerry served on the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy and the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. He was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Texas Tech’s Business School in 1996.
Jerry came to Christ early in life. He was named a deacon at Harwell Heights Baptist Church in Lubbock in 1962 and served as a deacon at Tallowood Baptist Church in Houston, where he and Gail have been members for 47 years. Also, he was a Bible Study Fellowship leader.
Jerry was a wonderful, loving husband to Gail and father to his two children, Lisa and Scott. Known as Grandad, he loved his granddaughters, Meredith and Emma, and sat through many dance and cheerleading events for them. He was a supporter of the arts in Houston enjoying theater and the symphony with his wife and friends. Jerry and Gail were blessed with many travel opportunities including the Holy Land with their church and a Baltic cruise with his brother and sister-in-law. He was a lifetime Astros fan and an enthusiastic Texas Tech basketball supporter.
Many thanks to our wonderful home health caregivers, Yaneth Valerio and Marina Alvarado, for their loving care over the last two years. We also want to thank the Abundant Life Sunday School class and other long-time friends for their prayers and support during Jerry’s illness.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, sister Norma Jo Rogers and her husband, Joe, brother Chapmond Davis and his wife Jo, brother Sherril Davis and wife, Deffie, and good friends Jim Holland and Logan Slaughter.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Gail, his son, Scott, of Houston, his daughter, Lisa, and her husband Bill Miller of Birmingham, Alabama, his two granddaughters, Meredith and Emma Miller, his sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Hal Phelps of Austin/Spearman, nephews and nieces - Jimmy Hatler, Melody deCoverly, Barbara Hardy, Mark Davis, John Davis, Carrie Zollinger, Don Davis, Dr. Robert Davis, Dr. David Phelps and Todd Phelps.
