Jeraine was a wonderful mother, wife, grandmother, aunt, cousin, teacher, artist, and friend.
As a child, Jeraine studied at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts under full scholarship. After graduating from Reagan High School she studied commercial and fashion illustration at Feather and Feather School of Design. Early on she worked many years as a freelance commercial fashion illustrator where her work was featured in many newspapers and catalogues. Later in life she bought her first tube of oil paint and found her calling as a portrait artist and teacher. Her paintings are in homes across the country. She was commissioned by the Houston Bar Association to paint the portraits of various Harris County judges. She also painted many portraits for the University of Texas School of Nursing. She won many awards at juried art shows and was a long-time member of the Houston Art Society, Houston Art League, and American Pen Women. Jeraine taught oil painting to hundreds of long-time students, many who attended classes at Jeraine’s Paintin’ Place and Gallery, that she operated at least 25 years. She was loved by her students for her wisdom, talent, sharp wit, kind critiques, and counseling. She “helped finish” many of her student’s masterpieces.
She is survived by daughters Vickie Reat and wife Natasha Schave and their children Wylie and Esme; Jennifer Kappus and her husband Ron and their children Orry Kappus and Sabrina Bach; grandson Nathan Kinman; sister-in-law Helene Reat; and first cousin Sandra Brezina. She was great-grandmother to Samuel and Ethan Bach. She was survived by nieces, nephews, and special cousins. Jeraine is predeceased by her beloved husband Grover, her daughter Angela Kinman, and her parents.
Jeraine loved her family, her cats, and glass candy dishes. She also had a fondness for gardening, Shark Tank, Galveston, port, parties, hamburger helper, shake n’ bake, cigarettes, and polyester.
