Jean Lee Lim was born in Shanghai, China on July 23, 1938. As a child growing up during the communist takeover, her future was dictated by the government. She was assigned to study and become a dentist, which she had no interest in. After graduation, Jean left to join her father in Hong Kong where she met her soon to be husband, John, at her father’s jewelry store. John was visiting from the United States. Once they got married, Jean immigrated to the US and learned English at the University of Houston. John and Jean had a grocery store with John’s brother, Tony, called Family Super Market. They worked long hours together at the store where Jean was the acting CFO and much more.
In 1965, Trudy came along and then Glenda followed 11 months later. Shortly after, John was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer. All seemed hopeless to John and Jean but in that dark time, someone shared the gospel with them and they both accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
After retiring in 1992, Jean and John became more involved with Chinese Baptist Church and the Berean Sunday School class. They were also able to travel with friends to San Francisco, Las Vegas and China until John was not physically able to travel. Jean took such loving care of John until he went home to be with the Lord. God blessed Jean with friends at church who would meet on Fridays to fold the Sunday bulletins, earning them the name “The Friday Folders”.
As her health started to decline in older age, battling Breast Cancer, Parkinson’s and Dementia, her normal” day became a little different. However, she was still able to enjoy some of her favorite things such as playing blackjack, mahjong, going out to eat in Chinatown or going shopping. Jean also began attending the Gathering Place which was hosted by various churches working with the Interfaith CarePartners. At the Gathering Place, Jean had fun seeing entertainers, making beautiful artwork, playing
carnival games, singing songs, exercising, eating delicious lunches and playing bingo. Jean always said that the people at each Gathering Place were so nice and was always excited to go.
Jean was a Proverbs 31 woman, a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was always gracious, kind, and generous. She had a quiet strength that was evident as she aged with such grace, never complaining about anything and finding joy in the little things like an ice cold Dr. Pepper, one of the many things that she passed down to her family. Her strength, humility, love and faith were evidence that the Lord was present in her life. Jean has gone to be with her Heavenly Father and experience the most amazing everlasting love and peace.
A visitation for Jean will be held Sunday, January 14, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale, 6900 Lawndale, Houston, TX 77023.
