Jean Barnes Devaney

Jean Barnes Devaney passed away February 27, 2012 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease and injuries suffered from the disease. She is survived by her husband Bill, son Michael & wife Cynthia, son-in-law John P. Owens and grandchildren Grace & Max Devaney and Jeffrey & Melissa Owens.

Jean was born on August 15, 1925 in Berwyn, PA to Harpel and Florence Barnes. She was preceded in death by her brother Robert Barnes of West Chester, PA and her daughter Carol Devaney Owens of Sugar Land, TX.

Jean graduated from TE High School in Berwyn, PA in 1943 and Pierce Business School in Philadelphia, PA. She was employed by Kemper Insurance Co. and by the Deveraux Schools. She was married to Charles William Devaney on Sept. 29, 1950 and had (2) children, Carol Ann in 1953 and Michael in 1956.

Jean was a busy homemaker raising Carol and Mike in PA, then in New Jersey where Bill worked (8) years for RCA Defense Electronic Products before joining Price Waterhouse & Co. in Philadelphia. In 1969 PW transferred the family, at Bill's request, to Houston where he augmented the consulting practice.

In Houston, Carol and Mike completed high school at Memorial HS, then Carol graduated from Trinity and Mike from SMU. Jean was a founding member of the Memorial City Hospital Volunteer group and served in the group for many years. She subsequently volunteered in the Memorial Assistance Ministry retail store.

Jean's major interest in life was her children, after Carol and John P. Owens were married and had Melissa and Jeff; and Mike and Cynthia Stimble were married and had Grace and Max; her grandchildren were her pride and joy. Jean always had a love for dogs, particularly Welsh Corgis. She was a member of the Bluebonnet Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club and owned several fine specimens of that breed.

Jean and Bill have been long time members of Pines Presbyterian Church located at 12751 Kimberley Lane, Houston, TX 77024 and a memorial service for Jean was held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 2, 2012.

In lieu of flowers, Jean would prefer any donations in her memory be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation or your favorite animal shelter in Houston. Jean & Bill would also like to express their appreciation for the loving care Jean received from the staff at Vosswood Nursing Center. Their skill and compassion is deeply appreciated.
