Janie was born in Placedo, Texas on March 15, 1924 to Luis and Ignacia Lopez. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Mauricio G. Baltazar, a daughter whom she lost at birth, along with her parents and six of her seven siblings. She is survived by a brother, Eddie Lopez; three children Emilio R. Baltazar, Noe M. Baltazar, Judy A. Tijerina and spouse, Juan Tijerina. She was blessed with 5 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great- grandchildren.
Janie and her husband Mauricio moved to Houston from Corpus Christi, Texas in 1949. They resided in Northeast Houston where they raised their three children. Janie loved gardening, sewing, and cooking. She was known to sew outfits for her children, costumes for her grandchildren, and cook meals for everyone who came to visit. Janie and her family attended La Puerta Abierta church where she was an active member of the women’s ministry and could be found cooking and fundraising for the church. It was there where she found a church home and grew in her walk with the Lord. In the late eighties, Janie moved to South Houston where she spent her time caring for her husband and helped raise her grandchildren. She was a selfless and loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
After the death of her husband, Janie’s health found her in the care of nursing facilities. She found joy in meeting new people and quickly became a favorite to many of the nurses and staff. Janie enjoyed her days at her new home and could always be found at social events, BINGO games, and Wal-Mart outings. She put a smile on lots of faces and kept everyone who walked into her room laughing throughout her later years.
Janie absolutely enjoyed visits from family and friends, watching her family grow, and collecting photos and trinkets for her room. She was a sharp woman and very quick with her witty remarks. There was never a dull moment when visiting with her. Janie was very inquisitive and wanted to know all about what was happening in the lives of her loved ones and those around her. She listened intently to every word that was said during visits and surely remembered every detail upon the next visit. She was very particular about what she liked and how things were to be done and expressed her wishes with grace. Janie was an example of true confidence and strength.
In her last days, Janie was ready to meet her Lord, Jesus Christ. She could be heard praying and singing songs to her Savior. She had peace knowing that her assignment here on Earth was coming to an end. Although she will be deeply missed, Janie’s memory and legacy will live on and be celebrated by all who knew her.
