Jim was born in Clanton, AL, and grew up at the Alabama Baptist Children’s Home in Troy, AL. After graduating from Auburn University in 1953, he served four years in the US Air Force, including a tour in Korea during the Korean War. He later attended Howard (now Samford University) graduating in 1960 with a pharmacy degree. He worked as a pharmacist for over 50 years, mostly in Jasper, AL. He was a deacon at First Baptist Church, Jasper, for many years where he taught Sunday School. Jim was a gifted poet and published a book of poems to benefit the Alabama Baptist Children’s Home.
Jim is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn Hayne Smith; son David Smith (Dee); daughter Lisa Sullivan (A.J.); grandchildren Amy A. Smith, Brian H. Smith (Christin), and Anna James Sullivan; great grandchildren Luther H. Smith, and Benjamin L. Smith (to be born soon).
