Jimmy was born in Paducah, Texas on July, 17, 1912 to Robert and Irene McPherson. He had two sisters, Elizabeth, and Irene, and one brother, Don, who have all predeceased him. His family moved around for a while before settling in Houston. After high school graduation, he began working for Southwestern Bell, and he worked there until his retirement in 1971.
In the early thirties he met and married the love of his life, Ray G. Couvillon, who passed away in 2006. They had one daughter, Frances, who along with her husband Gery Jordan, and three young daughters, Vicki Ann, Beth and Carolmarie perished in a plane crash in 1970.
He is survived by nieces, Peggy Poncio, Marianne Finch and Ann Morris, nephew, John Lillard and several great nieces and nephews.
Jimmy became active in the Lions Club in the 1940’s and was a Past District Governor, also holding other offices. His willingness to be of service to others was always important to him. Jimmy and Ray enjoyed many travels and memorable times with the Lions Club. Many wonderful, lasting friendships evolved. After his early retirement from Southwestern Bell, and the tragic loss of Frances and family, he was asked to be Director of the Lions Camp for special need children in Kerrville. The two years spent at the Lions Camp was a gratifying time. Most recently, in April 2011, Jimmy was honored as one of three Lions Legends, in appreciation of his faithful service to the Club.
Jimmy and Ray moved from their long time residence in West University to University Place Retirement Community in 1999. They enjoyed activities and new friendships while living there. Jimmy was in the Nursing Center for the last five years. Jimmy continued to make a positive impact on the lives of those around him up until his final days. Jimmy was dearly loved.
Thanks to all the University Place staff and nursing professionals for your loving care of this special man, who always had a smile and a kind word. Also, thanks to Compassionate Care Hospice. Lastly, thanks to Seita Coleman for being a caring friend to Jimmy.
Funeral services will held at 10:00 AM, Friday Dec. 20, 2013 at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway. University Place Chaplain, Bill Davis, will officiate.
