James graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston and in 2021, he reflected fondly on that experience. “They had a TV department where I was able to learn about the work behind the camera and focused on the technical aspects of directing, producing, and editing television programs.” That experience shaped his future and led to a 20 year career in the television industry. During his time in Los Angeles, California, he worked at Deluxe Video Systems, Fox Sports Network Operation Center, and Cepheid. James was an avid photographer and could always be seen behind the camera at family events. He was a kind son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to all he met during his life.
James is survived by his brother, Robert Powell Haight and his wife Patricia; niece, Autumn Powell and her sons, Joseph Howard Hebert and Jeffrey Powell Hebert; nephew, Michael Tilghman; and a number of extended family that James cherished in his life. James was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation and funeral services are scheduled for Friday, May 26, 2023 at Forest Park Lawndale. Visitation will be at the Chapel of the Angels at 11:00 a.m. followed by the funeral service at noon. Graveside services will be held immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to one of James’ favorite organizations, Houston Public Media, at https://donate.houstonpublicmedia.org/hpmf/donate.
