James Richard Edwards was born September 7, 1984, to Grace Mary Edwards (Andersen) and James B. Edwards, in Houston, Texas. He was the first of three children, followed by his sister Laura Edwards and his brother Joseph Edwards. He departed this earthly life on February 5, 2023.
After graduating from Foster High School in Richmond, Texas, Jim attended Louisiana State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and became a life-long Tigers fan. He then went on to earn his doctorate of jurisprudence from the University of Houston. Jim was an exceptional lawyer and loved practicing law. After working at the firms of Edwards & Associates in Houston, and Brock, Person in San Antonio, Jim opened his own offices and created his own very successful firm which focused on the representation of plaintiffs in personal injury and medical malpractice cases. He was known for his dedication to his clients and his zeal and personal commitment to their causes.
Jim suffered from a seizure disorder, epilepsy, starting at age 7. From then on, he never had a night without multiple seizures. He never got a good night’s sleep. In spite of this, he graduated from college and law school and built a successful career and law firm. One can only imagine the strength of character it took for him to accomplish these things under these difficult circumstances. In spite of this, however, Jim was an optimist and happy and fun to be around.
Jim loved his family and he would certainly include in that group his two English Bulldogs, “Abita” and “Blue”. (Those of us familiar with the names of Louisiana beers will recognize where the name “Abita” came from.) Abita somehow knew when Jim was about to have a seizure and would do her best to comfort and protect him. Shortly before his death, Jim tried a major jury trial in Brownsville, Texas. “Blue” was right there with him.
In addition to his sister Laura and brother Joe, Jim was close to his maternal grandparents, Richard and Ellen Andersen and his many close friends. He will be missed.
