Jack, born in Austin, Texas on the 17th of August 1948, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in business administration in 1970. He served as President of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and was a member of the Texas Cowboys. He then completed law school at the University of Texas at Austin in 1973.
He and his family settled in Houston where he began his distinguished career practicing law. Jack was a partner at the law firm Baker, Brown, Sharman, Wise & Parker from 1973 until 1984. He then moved as a partner to the law firm Chamberlain Hrdlicka until 1993 when he moved to the law firm Porter & Hedges, L.L.P., where he finished his career. Jack was a partner in the real estate and real estate finance sections of Porter & Hedges, L.L.P.
He was listed in The Best Lawyers in America in Real Estate Law since 2001, and was selected as a “Texas Super Lawyer” in Real Estate Transactions in surveys conducted by Texas Monthly since 2003. In May 2009, he was listed in Super Lawyers Corporate Counsel Edition for the State of Texas in real estate law.
Jack was a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, the Houston Bar Association where he served as former chairman, American College of Real Estate Lawyers, Houston Real Estate Lawyers Council and the College of the State Bar of Texas. He was a Martindale Hubbell AV rated attorney and board-certified in Commercial Real Estate Law through the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 1983. Jack was a member of the Board of Directors of River Oaks Country Club, where he served as Treasurer.
Jack’s greatest passions were his family, friends and hunting. He was a loyal friend to all that knew him and a dedicated father, grandfather and husband.
Jack was preceded in death by his father, the late Oscar Judson Wise, and his mother, the late Ann Hendrick Wise. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Ann Baker Wise; his children, Jennifer Martinez, Jackson Wise, Katie Stanton, Ali Murphy and their spouses, Corby Martinez, Lorraine Wise, Bobby Stanton and Matt Murphy, respectively; his eight grandchildren, Will Martinez, Kate Martinez, Corby Martinez, Mary Pete Martinez, Jack Wise III, Charlie Wise, Locke Stanton and Mia Murphy; and his siblings, Bill Wise, Mike Wise and Sara Gucker.
The family would like to acknowledge both Porter & Hedges, L.L.P. and the Memorial Hermann Prevention & Recovery Center for their unwavering support of Jack and his family.
A memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 7th of August, at River Oaks Baptist Church, 2300 Willowick Road, where Pastor Martus Miley is to officiate.
Immediately following the service, all are invited to greet the family during a reception at the adjacent Segner Family Commons.
